Kevin C. Cox / Getty Images Share articleNickeil Alexander-Walker of the Atlanta Hawks has been named the NBA’s Most Improved Player for the 2025-26 season. The 27-year-old guard beat out Portland Trail Blazers forward Deni Avdija and Detroit Pistons big man Jalen Duren. This is the second consecutive season a Hawks player has won Most Improved honors, after guard Dyson Daniels took home the honor last season. Alan Henderson (1997-98) is the only other player in franchise history to win the award. The award culminates what has been a career year for Alexander-Walker, who joined Atlanta last summer via a sign-and-trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves. This season, the seven-year veteran averaged career-bests in points (20.8), rebounds (3.4) and assists (3.7) per game while shooting a career-high 45.9 percent from the field and making 39.9 percent of his 3s. Alexander-Walker established himself as one the NBA’s best defenders during his stop in Minnesota. He previously bounced around the league with the Utah Jazz and New Orleans Pelicans, who acquired his draft rights after the Brooklyn Nets selected him 17th overall in the 2019 NBA Draft. This season, Alexander-Walker was a catalyst for the Hawks’ surprising run to the playoffs after the team traded longtime centerpiece Trae Young to the Washington Wizards in January. As a sidekick to Hawks All-Star forward Jalen Johnson, Alexander-Walker, in the first season of a four-year, $62 million contract, grew into one of the league’s most consistent scorers by recording more 20-point games this season (46) than his first six combined (24). According to NBA.com, over his 2,603 regular-season minutes on the court, the Hawks had a net rating of plus-4.0, a mark that fell to minus-1.0 in his 1,348 minutes on the bench. A big reason for Alexander-Walker’s growth as a scorer: He mastered his shooting touch. His career-best 251 3-pointers were pivotal to the Hawks finishing fifth among all NBA teams in 3-point percentage (37.1) and sixth in made triples per game (14.6). Spot the pattern.
