George Wood/Getty Images Share articleNewcastle United midfielder Lewis Miley will miss the remainder of the season after breaking his leg. The 20-year-old sustained the injury to the fibula in his right leg during a training session on Tuesday. The club say he will now see a specialist before embarking on a rehabilitation programme in conjunction with the club’s medical team. He is expected to be fit again in time for pre-season ahead of the 2026/27 campaign. The academy graduate made 34 appearances this season, including 23 in the Premier League, and scored three goals. His last outing came in the win over Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, where he started at right-back and played 90 minutes of the 3-1 victory. Newcastle, 13th in the Premier League, have three games of the season remaining beginning with the trip to Nottingham Forest on Sunday. This is not the kind of development Miley deserves or Newcastle need, but it is decidedly in keeping with his and their season. Miley is ready to be a regular starter for Eddie Howe’s team and everybody knows it, including the head coach. The 20-year-old has excelled in his recent performances, whether in midfield or at right-back, showing a rare combination of technique and maturity. Howe views him as a player to build a team around. Yet there have not been enough of those performances. A dead leg injury which dragged on caused him to miss 13 matches in all competitions between February and April and he will now be absent until the start of next season. It may only be three more games, but it still represents a blow. Newcastle need him. That is the player Miley has developed into. Spot the pattern.
