The organization announced his firing Monday night, ending a tenure that began with legitimate promise before fizzling out. The Devils have a 40-34-3 record this season and would need a miracle to qualify for the playoffs. “Tom and I had a thoughtful conversation today and agreed it was time to move in a new direction,” said Devils managing partner David Blitzer. “Tom changed the trajectory of our team here, including setting a franchise record for points in a season and helping make New Jersey a hockey destination. He is a well-respected leader across the Devils’ organization and NHL, and I am grateful for our friendship. I wish Tom and his family all the best. “As we prepare to move forward, it is important I acknowledge our fans. I recognize we have not delivered in the way you expect and deserve and I understand and share in your frustration. This is a critical offseason for our franchise, and we will explore all avenues that best position the Devils to compete for a Stanley Cup once again.” Fitzgerald was hired by New Jersey as assistant GM in July 2015 and promoted to GM in January 2020 amid a stretch of four seasons outside the playoffs before overseeing their return to relevance. The team finished with 112 points in 2022-23 and reached the second round of the playoffs before losing to the Carolina Hurricanes in five games. They weren’t able to build on that success despite having a core built around Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier. The Devils missed the playoffs in 2023-24 before losing to Carolina in the first round again last spring. Fitzgerald’s final season in charge will be defined by a move he didn’t make — failing to swing a deal with the Vancouver Canucks to land Quinn Hughes and unite him with younger brothers Jack and Luke. Quinn Hughes ended up with the Minnesota Wild instead. To his credit, Fitzgerald was a solid GM for stretches of his tenure — the Timo Meier acquisition in 2023 was bold, and the core he assembled around Jack Hughes and Hischier should benefit the next person who gets the job. But Fitzgerald ran out of time to get this group over the top. “After talking with David Blitzer, it was apparent to everyone that the best course of action is to move on for the benefit of the team,” Fitzgerald said. “I am incredibly appreciative to David, Josh Harris, and the entire New Jersey Devils organization for being a part of my life for the past decade. The Devils are fortunate to have a core of great players, vocal and passionate fans, but most importantly, tremendous people who worked with me toward a common goal. “I’ve always said that New Jersey is a hidden gem and I’m proud of the effort that we put in to raise the standard and make it a destination. I look forward to the next step in my hockey career and will always look back fondly on my time with the Devils.” Fitzgerald had one year remaining on his contract, per league sources. New Jersey is one of three NHL teams now searching for someone to head up their hockey operations, joining the Toronto Maple Leafs and Nashville Predators. Fitzgerald, who was the first captain in Predators history during his playing days, is considered a candidate for the opening in Nashville. The Devils GM job will be viewed as very desirable around the league by would-be candidates. It’s a team with star core players that screams bounce-back next season. There’s some work to be done, of course, most notably resolving the Dougie Hamilton situation either way this offseason. Earlier this year, Hamilton’s agent J.P. Barry went public in suggesting he would work with Fitzgerald to find his client a new home after Hamilton was healthy scratched. But in the end, Hamilton wasn’t moved before the March 6 trade deadline. Fitzgerald also mentioned after the deadline that he would likely look to move one of his defenseman this offseason to bolster his forward group. The Devils, league sources confirmed at the time, were listening on Simon Nemec heading into the trade deadline. Now it remains to be seen how new management will want to address all that.
