New Gas Tanker Arrives at Baniyas Port, SPC Says It Aims to Enhance Supply Stability
The gas tanker GAS HELENA arrived at the Syrian Petroleum Company’s terminal in Baniyas, carrying a shipment estimated at around 2,030 metric tons, as mooring crews began unloading the cargo into gas storage tanks at the Baniyas facility.
In a Facebook post published on Sunday, April 5, the Syrian Petroleum Company said the unloading process began after the necessary technical procedures had been completed, as gas deliveries continue through the terminal.
The company added that other tankers carrying gas are waiting for their turn to complete mooring and unloading operations, as part of efforts to ensure uninterrupted supplies and strengthen supply stability.
The Baniyas oil port received several gas tankers during the past month as part of a plan aimed at securing steady supplies and meeting market demand amid a worsening shortage of household gas in several areas across Syria.
Gas Crisis in Syria
The arrival of the tanker comes as different parts of Syria continue to face a shortage of household gas. In earlier reports, Enab Baladi documented rising prices and difficulty obtaining gas cylinders, especially in Damascus and its countryside, Aleppo, Daraa, and Deir Ezzor.
The Syrian Ministry of Energy had previously said the crisis was mainly caused by a “supply-side disruption,” noting that bad weather had temporarily delayed the mooring and unloading of gas ships at the port, which affected availability in some areas.
Economic expert Feras Shabou also told Enab Baladi that the crisis stems from deeper structural factors, including limited gas field production, technical failures, weak investment, import restrictions, and financing difficulties.
Economic researcher Mohammad al-Salloum added that the gas sector is burdened by the legacy of war and sanctions, including damage to fields in central Syria, transport networks, and processing stations, which has reduced output and increased reliance on costlier, less efficient alternatives.
These continued efforts to boost gas supplies through Syrian ports come as the government moves toward a broader strategy aimed at doubling domestic production to achieve energy security. Syria plans to double natural gas production this year to 15 million cubic meters per day, in an effort to balance rising demand with available supply in local markets.
