Naked cyclist was 'attacked' by two men on e-scooter during charity ride who nearly pushed him into oncoming bus

Published: 09:52, 19 July 2026 | Updated: 09:56, 19 July 2026 A naked cyclist has been 'attacked' by two men on an e-scooter during a charity ride and almost pushed into an oncoming bus.  The man, known as Mo, claims he was left with red bruises following the assault which occurred on Saturday, June 20, in Chelmsford, Essex.  Video footage captured the moment the two men, who have not been identified, drove past Mo on an e-scooter, before turning back and kicking him in the thigh - where he narrowly avoided being hit by an oncoming bus.  Mo had been cycling as part of the Four Seasons Naked Bike Ride event when the incident took place, a protest against the 'destructive elements' of car culture and a celebration of the bicycle and body. Detailing the attack, Mo said: 'I was riding at the back of the group when it happened. 'Two guys on an electric scooter came up from behind, said something, passed me, then made a U-turn and came towards me, and the one on the back kicked me as they passed by. 'His foot hit the lower part of my thigh first, then slid all the way up to my stomach. 'Fortunately, because the impact was distributed across this wide area, the force was absorbed, preventing a severe injury. He added: 'I will not let violence like this stop me from participating in the protest.' Essex Police have confirmed investigations into the alleged attack are ongoing but no arrests have been made.  A spokesperson from the force said: 'We're investigating an incident in Chelmsford in which a man reported being assaulted in Duke Street between 4pm and 4.20pm on 20 June. 'At this stage, no arrests have been made and our work is ongoing.' The incident comes less than one year after leading naturist Robert Brown made headlines after claiming he was mistaken for a 'pervert,' and punched off his bike by a binman. Mr Brown, from Tendring in Essex, had been biking through Colchester last August during a Four Seasons World Naked Bike Ride event when the assault occurred. The 59-year-old website designer was left with grazing to his hands, arms and legs and now relies on a walking stick for longer distances after Lee Turnage punched him from his bike. Mr Brown, who is part of the Naturist Action Group, said Turnage had rode past him on an uninsured motorbike and made a 'filthy' gesture with his fist. He said: 'It started out as any other ride. The town crier saw us off and all around the route was perfectly fine. 'I saw him coming down the road and he made a filthy gesture with his fist and called us 'wankers'. 'I moved in front of my deaf friend so they could read my lips to tell them to move over to the layby because I knew he was going to come back. 'I heard him turn around and rev. Before I knew what had happened, I felt this almighty whack to the head. 'I thought, 'What am I doing down here'?' Mr Brown had been punched from his e-bike and hit the pavement as Turnage sped off - and later claimed he had mistaken him for a 'pervert'. Mr Brown added: 'I knew I hadn't broken anything because I could move my legs. But I had gravel in places I didn't think you could get gravel into.' Following the attack, Mr Brown - who has been participating in the charity rides for 15 years - said it was important for the public to understand why nudism in public is not illegal. He said: 'If I don't go on another ride then he's won. It won't stop me. 'It takes the attitudes of a generation to change generational attitudes. Things are shifting but very slowly. 'To change people's opinion and improve the perception of naturism, we need to have more events like this so it becomes the norm and acceptable.'  He added: 'Unfortunately, these attacks are an occupational hazard but they shouldn't be. We are not perverts.' British Naturism defines naturism as a  'philosophical belief in a natural, naked lifestyle wherein persons espouse nudity as part or possibly all of their lifestyle'. The College of Policing say naturists have a right to freedom of expression and it is only a criminal offence if they commit a sexual offence or engage in behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress. The common law offence of outraging public decency applies when a person's behaviour is lewd, obscene or disgusting as to shock. It also states that 'a naturist whose intention is limited to going about their lawful business while naked will not be guilty of sexual offences'. A 2022 survey commissioned by British Naturism found there are an estimated 6.7 million naturists in the UK.
