Published: 18:08, 19 June 2026 | Updated: 18:17, 19 June 2026 A grieving family is fighting for answers after their beloved son fell 30ft to his death on what was meant to be a fun day hiking with friends on an idyllic California trail. John Jiore Jonson, an ex-Disney employee who was walking with former colleagues, was found dead in a swimming hole beneath a sheer rocky cliff after breaking off from the group on June 7. The 29-year-old suffered a fatal head injury after plunging from the cliffside on the Last Chance Trail in Los Padres National Forest, about 90 miles northwest of Los Angeles. Known to his close circle as 'Jio,' distraught loved ones remembered Jonson as 'a ray of sunshine, who brought people together with a contagious laugh.' Authorities are investigating the circumstances behind his death, and no persons of interest have been identified – leaving his family to grapple with unanswered questions. 'We are starting to run out of options, we are desperate, we just want to know what happened to Jio,' his mother, Jhoanna Jonson, told the Daily Mail. Jonson was hiking with four friends when the tragic accident occurred. They were on the scenic route at around midday, according to the Ventura County Fire Department. The group had picked him up for the hike at 7am, parking their cars at his family's house and carpooling to the forest. But only Jonson's friends would return from the walk, with the young man's family claiming that the group left the scene without informing them their son was dead. John Jiore Jio,29, fell to his death from a California hiking trail at midday on June 7 Jio was hiking with his four friends near the Punch Bowl area in Ventura County when the life-altering incident took place Jonson had spotted a couple (pictured) relaxing on the rock face below and set off with one of his friends to try and join them. The place where he fell, according to witnesses, is circled After speaking to members of the group, his family told the Daily Mail that they believe Jonson had spotted a couple lounging on a viewpoint by some rock pools, and had been eager to get closer to the cliff's edge to take a look.  His brother Juan Jonson shared what he said he was told by three of his siblings' friends.  The first, who the Daily Mail is calling Sarah, said Jonson ventured off the trail with another member of the group in an attempt to find a route down. She told Juan that it was then that his brother fell off the edge into the water-filled ravine below. However, the family cited the discrepancy in recollections of how the fall took place. While they said Sarah initially stated on a call to Juan that 'Jonson fell backwards', days later in a text message, she said Jonson 'fell forwards'. She also stated that 'he tried to stop himself.' Juan then asked 'so he managed to try holding on to something?' to which she responded, 'no there was nothing to hold on to, he slid right off.' Juan says he was then told that Jonson remained submerged for more than five minutes before three strangers rushed to assist.  The rest of the group did not venture down themselves. A second friend of Jonson, who we are calling Jane, told his brother that doing so 'would have put their lives at risk considering their state of shock.' 'Jio slipped in a wide crevice between two cliffs. The drop off was steep, straight down, and personally scary. He was in a really difficult spot to reach that would've put our own safety and lives at risk, also considering our state of shock,' she told Juan over text. She explained that when Jonson fell, the group yelled for help and tried to get service to alert 911.  'I understand you're processing and just trying to figure out all the details [of] what happened. However, Jio was our friend and we did the best that we could in that situation,' she added. At the same time, Sarah told the family that a 'hero' Good Samaritan, Isaac Vilas, jumped into the rock pool to pull him out of the water and then performed CPR.    Speaking to the Daily Mail, Vilas confirmed that series of events. He said Jonson had a faint pulse by the time he got to him and described the harrowing experience of dragging him from the water. 'We tried to get them to as secure a place as we could to cut off his backpack, trying to not move his head too much. My friend thought that he found a very light pulse, but with his facial injuries there wasn't much that we could've done. 'We did give CPR for a couple of minutes but by the time we saw him his mouth foaming, he was pale. His eyes had no light in them.' He added that Jonson had a 'Zombie-like' gash across his face, and had sustained an 'internal bleeding hemorrhage in the brain.' Texts that Juan received from one of his brother's friends, who we are calling Jane, in the days after the hike Emergency services were dispatched shortly after 12.15pm, following reports that a hiker had fallen from a steep cliffside section of the trail. Ventura County Fire Department crews, sheriff's deputies and search-and-rescue teams quickly responded to the remote backcountry location. Despite the response, Jonson was pronounced dead at the scene at 12.25pm by Captain Chris Zapata of the Ventura County Sheriff's Office. Soon after, at 12.40pm, air support was deployed to assist as rescuers attempted to move the hiker's dead body in challenging terrain. Authorities say the incident is being treated as a tragic accident and have ruled out foul play, though the exact circumstances leading to the fall remain under investigation. Jonson's mother, brother and long-term girlfriend remain skeptical, and said they have troubling questions surrounding the circumstances of his death and its handling by authorities. The family said they weren't informed about his death until 11 hours later, when a police officer arrived at the house to tell them he 'had passed that day from a 30ft fall while hiking.' The final picture of Jonson, taken by one of his friends on the hike before he fell to this death According to the family, three bystanders rescued Jio's body moments after he fell and conducted multiple resuscitation attempts before emergency services arrived Officers told the family that Jonson had been taken to the medical examiner's office, and that further details were pending the post-mortem report. When reached by the Daily Mail, the medical examiner said that report wouldn't be released for three months. The family said they spent the day of the hike fraught with anxiety, desperately trying to understand what had happened in the hours after Jonson was meant to return without any contact from those who were with him. The waiting period for formal reports has only intensified their sense of frustration and distress. Family members told the Daily Mail they had felt something was not right that day when they didn't receive any messages or calls from Jonson, who is 'always responsive and checking in,' according to girlfriend Bianca Verona.  Based in the Philippines, Verona said she was awake due to the time difference when he called her at around 2.30am his time, five hours before he headed out for the hike. She said he had been struggling with poor sleep, averaging around four hours per night in the days leading up to the incident. Verona's last direct contact with him was when he sent a photo of a highway sign, which she described as an inside joke between them. She told the Daily Mail that she began fearing the worst after noticing his location had not moved for several hours, despite him being expected home. Verona said one of her lasting regrets is not asking Jonson more questions before he set off for the hike. She said she now wishes she had pressed him further about the trip and his plans that day. In a chilling twist, Jonson expressed that he might want to bail on the hike and hesitated on joining when speaking to a friend the night before, before adding that he was joking and that he would indeed be coming. Jio and his girlfriend of eight years Bianca Verona, who had her last exchange with him early that morning Verona and Jonson's family are urgently searching for more answers whilst they prepare for his funeral today, which in a devastating twist of fate was meant to be the day he received citizenship The young man's grief-stricken family say the most painful part of the tragedy is not just how he died, but that his best friends, who were with him, did not contact them immediately to tell them of the incident. Juan revealed that none of the group came to knock on their door where their cars were parked or made any attempt to alert them over the 11-hour period after it happened. 'They could have sent flowers, or even a call, they would have had service by that point, we were left waiting hours,' Jhoanna said. Jonson's friend Jane explained in texts to Juan that the friends found it 'too hard' to deliver the news to the family in the aftermath. 'We believed it was better for the police to deliver the news because they are equipped and have experience in that,' she said, adding: 'I really hoped the police came to tell in person, I'm sorry if they only delivered the news on a call.' The Daily Mail has reached out to the four friends, the medical examiner and local police for comment. Sarah posted a touching tribute to Jonson on social media, saying her 'heart was heavy' and that they were waiting on a call or text for their next hike. 'You always pushed me to try new things, go explore my dream places,' the tribute read. 'I will and always be forever grateful that I got to experience a friendship with you. I miss you every day.' Texts between Juan Jonson and one of his brother's friends, who the Daily Mail is calling Jane Jonson's mother, meanwhile, is still scouring for answers as she says the entirety of the group has now blocked the family on social media. She said she could not reconcile the incident with her son's caution and intelligence, and does not believe her son would have behaved recklessly near a steep drop. A third friend, who we are calling David, had not been in touch with the family at all in the immediate aftermath of the fall. He was eventually reached by Jonson's brother on June 17. Juan said the friend responded curtly to his messages, saying that he wouldn't receive any additional information from him than he had from the other friends. He added that it wasn't Jonson's brother's place to go around and talk about the accident because he wasn't present at the time. He also urged the brother, who had texted him repeatedly, to stop harassing him and to 'find peace.' Last Chance Trail is considered a moderately difficult hike in wilderness that is notorious among locals for hazardous drop-offs, unstable footing and steep cliff edges. Sections of the route run dangerously close to sheer cliffs, and officials have repeatedly urged hikers to exercise caution near narrow ledges and slippery rock surfaces throughout the area. The family said the group had begun hiking together in 2025, heading out onto trails together more frequently in recent months. Having all previously worked at Disney until Jonson's employment was terminated, the group was close-knit and saw each other frequently. The Daily Mail has reached out to Disney for comment on the situation over Jonson's termination but has not received response.  The family also said Jonson, who held Pilipino citizenship, had been due to attend his US citizenship oath ceremony on Tuesday, June 16, a milestone they described as deeply important to him.  Instead, a mass was held to honor his life at Sancturio de San Jose, in Green Hills.
