By 2023, Murphy was living out the controversial ‘passport bro’ lifestyle in Thailand, in pursuit of more ‘traditional’ women after abandoning the western dating culture. For many of his followers, this marked the beginning of a years-long public unraveling with increasingly bizarre behavior, drug use and allegations of attacking his much younger Thai girlfriend, identified by the Daily Mail through a trail of social media posts as ‘Fairy.’ Murphy's downward spiral came to a tragic end this week when he drowned in a lake beside the luxury Bangkok villa he was sharing with Fairy, 22, whom he had been dating for the last three years. In his final moments, Murphy was screaming incoherently and making prayer-like gestures before entering the lake, where he struggled to stay afloat and eventually sank to the bottom.  The 32-year-old spent years turning his body into a lucrative business through supplements, coaching programs, relentless self-improvement and dating advice, making him one of the internet's earliest poster boys for the 'looksmaxxing' movement. The once razor-lean bodybuilder cycled between emaciated fasting phases and much heavier physiques, while fans became obsessed with his increasingly angular jawline.  Murphy attributed his transformation to a specially formulated chewing gum designed to strengthen facial muscles, although online speculation ranged from fillers to cosmetic surgery. Murphy relocated to Thailand in 2023 where he embraced the so-called ‘passport bro’ movement, whose followers encourage Western men to seek submissive partners overseas. ‘‘My type of women are becoming extinct by the cataclysmic asteroid that is modern feminism,’ Murphy wrote in a 2023 YouTube post to his followers. Murphy railed against modern dating conventions and argued that women had become too ‘masculine’, while praising what he described as more traditional relationships abroad. ‘Dating in the western world has become a nightmare. Social media and dating apps have streamlined women's access to the world’s highest value men.’ Murphy frequently flaunted his overseas life as a digital nomad, and railed against western dating culture in several posts to his followers  His once-disciplined fitness channel evolved into a stream of increasingly unconventional videos that, like that seen here, blurred the line between performance art, self-help and spiritual evangelism After taking up residence in Pattaya, a coastal city less than 63 miles outside of Bangkok, Murphy began posting increasingly provocative videos of him with Fairy, referring to her as his girlfriend.  In one clip filmed in front of a golf simulator, Murphy swung a golf club perilously close to her. In another, filmed at a driving range, she spits a golf ball out of her mouth. ‘My favorite ball dispenser’, Murphy wrote in the caption. In 2024, Murphy shared a bizarre video of him introducing Fairy to an 'Avatar' sex doll in an attempt to 'alleviate her jealousy.'  The relationship soon turned violent. In June 2024, Murphy smashed furniture and windows inside a villa before striking his girlfriend with a golf club, according to Thai authorities. She and her teenage sister reportedly escaped through a window before officers arrived. Murphy later claimed the incident had been staged for social media and separately alleged that a wound to his abdomen had been inflicted by his girlfriend during an argument — claims that have not been substantiated. A scar on Murphy's abdomen is visible in many of his posts. In 2024, he addressed his alleged 'stab wound' on Instagram while hawking 'healing' peptides that he claimed helped his recovery process.  Fairy has yet to address Murphy's death on her Instagram page. In another video, filmed beside the same lake where he would later drown, he ranted about shooting ‘dragons in these waters’ before diving into the lake. On Tuesday, police and emergency crews swarmed an exclusive gated estate in the Bang Phli district around 3pm, after receiving reports that Murphy was threatening a local taxi driver. Witnesses said Murphy arrived at the gated community in a cab before trying to climb into another vehicle, rolling on the ground, screaming incoherently and making prayer-like gestures. When officers arrived, he ran toward a nearby lake and dived into the water. Footage obtained by local media shows the shirtless influencer struggling in the water for around 15 minutes before disappearing beneath the surface. Rescue divers recovered his body about 30 minutes later from water more than 10 meters deep. Police have confirmed the cause of death was drowning, and have ordered a toxicology examination. Officers searching Murphy's vehicle reportedly found two unused syringes and unidentified pills. Among them was fellow bodybuilder Tony Huge, who had filmed with Murphy only days before his death. Huge rejected suggestions Murphy had been depressed, instead describing him as someone consumed by ambitious creative projects, golf and what he believed were profound spiritual discoveries. ‘He was tapped into a level of consciousness that most people never will be,’ Huge said. For the millions of followers who first discovered Murphy preaching discipline, confidence and physical perfection, the contrast with his final days could scarcely have been more stark. His death has also renewed attention on a string of high-profile bodybuilding influencers who died while living in Thailand, although under very different circumstances. German fitness star Jo Lindner, better known as Joesthetics, died from an aneurysm in 2023 aged just 30. Bodybuilder Leo Rex, whose real name was Laith Abdallah Algaz, was found dead at his home in Pattaya the same year. Despite an extensive investigation, Thai authorities have never publicly confirmed his cause of death. For many of Murphy's fans, the man who once embodied the internet's obsession with physical perfection ultimately became better known for the increasingly bewildering online persona that eclipsed the physique that made him famous.
