Morocco, US Deepen Cooperation to Reduce WMD Risks
Agadir – Morocco and the US are strengthening their security partnership through new programs aimed at reducing the risks linked to weapons of mass destruction (WMD), according to US budget documents for the 2027 fiscal year.
The initiatives fall under the Cooperative Threat Reduction (CTR) program, a global US framework that supports partner countries in strengthening their ability to detect, secure, and respond to nuclear, biological, and chemical threats.
“Establish a pathogen consolidation unit that provides secure pathogen storage to prevent theft or diversion,” US budget documents for the 2027 shared.
In Morocco, a key focus is biological security. Plans include the creation of a pathogen consolidation unit, a dedicated facility designed to safely store hazardous biological agents. The project seeks to minimize risks related to theft, accidental exposure, or misuse, while raising national biosafety standards.
This cooperation also covers chemical risk management. Through the program, the US will support the Royal Gendarmerie with training and equipment to improve the detection and identification of dangerous chemicals and potential weapon precursors. The initiative also introduces components related to chemical forensics.
“Providing training and equipment to the Royal Moroccan Gendarmerie to identify and characterize chemicals, toxins, and potential chemical weapons precursors and components,” US budget documents stated.
Beyond domestic measures, Morocco is involved in wider efforts targeting the illicit trafficking of sensitive materials. These efforts include evaluating vulnerabilities at border crossings and ports, as well as strengthening coordination between security agencies.
The program also points to the potential of establishing specialized units to investigate cross-border smuggling of hazardous substances.
According to the US documents, the CTR initiatives are civilian in nature, focusing on long-term capacity building rather than military operations. This includes developing infrastructure, enhancing technical expertise, and reinforcing institutions responsible for national security and public safety.
