The loss at Villa Park was Liverpool’s 19th defeat across all competitions this season and saw them slip to fifth in the Premier League, with Champions League qualification for next season still not guaranteed. That form has increased the pressure on Liverpool head coach Arne Slot, who has faced supporter criticism this season but believes he will still be in the job beyond this summer. Salah, who will end his nine-year spell at Anfield after next Sunday’s Premier League game at home to Brentford, has called on Liverpool to change their approach back to the high intensity, high energy style that was championed by Slot’s predecessor Jurgen Klopp. “That is the football I know how to play and that is the identity that needs to be recovered and kept for good,” Salah said in a social media post. “It cannot be negotiable and everyone that joins this club should adapt to it.” The Egyptian said his side “crumbled” to the loss at Villa. “Winning some games here and there is not what Liverpool should be about,” he added. “All teams win games.” Salah will leave Liverpool as one of the club’s most decorated players, having won eight trophies, including two Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2019. He is third on the club’s all-time leading goalscorer list, having scored 257 times in 441 appearances, behind only Ian Rush (346 goals) and Roger Hunt (285). “I have witnessed this club go from doubters to believers, and from believers to champions,” Salah wrote on social media. “It took hard work and I always did everything I could to help the club get there. Nothing makes me prouder than that. “Us crumbling to yet another defeat this season was very painful and not what our fans deserve. I want to see Liverpool go back to being the heavy metal attacking team that opponents fear and back to being a team that wins trophies. That is the football I know how to play and that is the identity that needs to be recovered and kept for good. It cannot be negotiable and everyone that joins this club should adapt to it. “Winning some games here and there is not what Liverpool should be about. All teams win games. “Liverpool will always be a club that means a great deal to me and to my family. I want to see it succeed for long after I have moved on. “As I’ve always said, qualifying to next season’s Champions League is the bare minimum and I will do everything I can to make that happen.” Salah’s future was cast into doubt earlier in the season following an incendiary interview after he was an unused substitute for December’s 3-3 draw at Leeds United, the third consecutive match in which he was not selected by head coach Slot. The Egypt international explained he felt “thrown under the bus” by the club and said his relationship with Slot had broken down. He left the door open to a January exit and claimed he has been made a scapegoat for Liverpool’s struggles this season, insisting “someone does not want me in the club”. Salah was subsequently left out of the Liverpool squad for the Champions League tie at Inter, which they won 1-0. The call was taken by sporting director Richard Hughes in conjunction with the club’s ownership and Arne Slot. The Liverpool head coach told a press conference before the Inter match that he had “no clue” if Salah had played his final game for the club. He said he was shocked by the claims that the pair’s relationship had broken down. Salah, however, was reintegrated back into Liverpool’s team following this winter’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), and has been a regular in the closing months of the campaign. Spot the pattern.
