Millions caught breaking major driving law as offenders face £300 fine for travelling without insurance

Nearly three million drivers in the UK have been caught travelling behind the wheel without valid car insurance, according to new research.

The study, carried out by price comparison site Go.Compare, suggested around 2.9 million motorists have been fined for driving uninsured vehicles at some point in their lives.

Drivers who are caught face tough penalties, with the current punishment a £300 fixed fine and six penalty points on their licence, a hit that can also push up future insurance costs.

The figures looked at how well motorists keep track of important documents, including insurance policies, and how aware drivers are of their insurance expiry dates.

The results showed the problem may be more common than many think. Almost half of drivers admitted they had made mistakes that made their car unroadworthy. Within that group, 15 per cent said they had been penalised specifically for not having insurance.

Across the wider population, that works out to roughly one in 20 adults. One key issue appears to be simple disorganisation.

Millions of people are losing track of their insurance paperwork, which can lead to policies lapsing without them realising.

Around 3.2 million adults, about six per cent of the population, said they had misplaced their car insurance documents at least once. Among drivers, just under one in 10 admitted to losing their policy details.

Without easy access to this information, motorists may not know when their cover expires, what it includes, or even who is insured to drive the vehicle.

That can leave people unknowingly breaking the law. Younger drivers seem to be most at risk. The research found that 14 per cent of under-35s had lost their insurance documents at some point.

This was more than double the rate among older drivers, where the figure drops to six per cent. This suggested that younger motorists may be more likely to let policies lapse simply because they lose track of the details.

Matt Sanders, a spokesman for Go.Compare, explained driving an uninsured car is an easy mistake to make.

"Your car insurance policy documents aren't something you're likely to look at every day, so it can be all too easy for them to become lost in a stack of papers, stuffed in a drawer, or mistakenly deleted from your inbox if you were sent a digital copy," he explained.

He warned not having documents to hand can quickly cause problems, especially in stressful situations.

"If you can't find your policy details when you need them, it could make it harder to make a claim or check what you're covered for," he said. "In some cases, it might even mean you don't realise your cover has expired."

However, the expert warned this can lead to drivers getting behind the wheel without valid insurance, often unintentionally.

Mr Sanders said technology could help reduce the risk. "Using an app like Renewal is a good way to keep track of your documents, as it allows you to store all the details of your insurance policies in one place, giving you easy access to the information you need whenever you need it," he said.

He added by having everything stored digitally, it can remove the need for drivers to dig through emails or paperwork.

Instead, drivers can quickly check their cover, helping them stay on the right side of the law and avoid costly penalties, the expert explained.
