Michael Carrick gets major boost as Man Utd rule out move for rival manager
Michael Carrick's hopes of landing the Manchester United job full-time have edged closer with Andoni Iraola being ruled out as a possible candidate. The outgoing Bournemouth boss, who looks set to secure the Cherries European football, has seen his reputation rise ever since arriving in England. He will be a man on the market come the summer and has been linked with the Old Trafford vacancy. But the Daily Mail reports Old Trafford bosses are not considering appointing the Spaniard - meaning Carrick has seen off another possible rival for the job that he currently holds. United have so far held off on making any permanent decision. Carrick was given the role until the end of the season but a stunning run of 10 wins in 15 games, which includes just two losses, has seen the Manchester side rise up to third and secure a Champions League berth, which looked unlikely earlier this season. Despite that no decision has been made on the ex-player, but Iraola will not be replacing him. It leaves the Bournemouth boss free to consider his other options with Chelsea , Crystal Palace and La Liga clubs all linked. As things stand Carrick looks to have won over the decision makers. The 44-year-old is set to be rewarded with a new contract whilst his backroom staff of Steve Holland, Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans and Travis Binnion are all poised to remain as his lieutenants. There have been calls for clarity to be given by the time the Premier League season comes to an end, with United's final game coming against Brighton . Having a manager in situ will aid them in the transfer market with potential signings likely wanting to know who they'll be playing under. United had been keen to avoid a repeat of the situation where they ended up handing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer the job. The Norwegian was hired in late 2018 to fill the void for a short period, but an impressive winning run saw them hand him the role full-time after only a matter of months, but he failed to deliver any silverware in his three-year stint. United have been through Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim as permanent managers since getting rid of Solskjaer but are no closer to winning the Premier League - which they've not won since 2013.
