The retired winger was once likened to The Simpsons’ character Sideshow Bob for his distinctive hair. He was a late bloomer as a player who worked as a garbage collector and barman before winning rugby league’s highest honours. And he has never coached in first grade, having spent a decade working behind the scenes.
Although his locks are long shorn, the shaven-headed Matt King still remains an unusual choice to lead one of the sport’s most high-profile teams, the New South Wales Blues. He will replace Laurie Daley, who stepped down having won the shield this year. And King admits he has not always had the confidence that he could be a head coach.
