A Manchester school was forced into a lockdown as a man who was "breaching a court order" was spotted with a brick on the premises.

Plice vehicles descended on the grounds of St Mark's RC Primary School around the Clifton area following reports of an individual wielding a brick.

Officers later arrested a 36-year-old man on suspicion of breaching a court order and criminal damage.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman confirmed a man had entered the school grounds with a brick. He was later taken to hospital.

Officers suspected the man could have been suffering a medical episode when he breached the court order.

He was seen near the primary school on Queensway at around 10am this morning as staff and pupils were alarmed by the sight, Greater Manchester Police added.

The man was arrested after he allegedly caused damage to a window.

While no harm was caused to any individuals, police said the school's senior officials chose to shut the school early for the weekend.

A GMP spokesman said: "Emergency services were called to reports of a concern for welfare on Queensway in Swinton at around 10am this morning (Friday 19 June).

"A man - who was potentially suffering a medical episode - entered the school grounds with a brick, causing alarm to school staff and pupils and damaging a window.

"Officers arrived on scene quickly and gained control of the man, who was taken by ambulance staff to hospital.

"No harm was caused to any of the school staff or the pupils, and the school has made the decision to close for the day and send children home."

Footage circulated online of a man being arrested on the ground outside a building.

In a separate incident earlier this month in Manchester, a schoolgirl was charged with three counts of attempted murder and two counts of possessing a bladed article on her own school premises.

She appeared in court today via video link after the attempted murder of two students and a staff member on June 9.

In the days following the attack, counter-terrorism police took the helm of the investigation into the attack.

Due to her age, the girl will remain unnamed, although a judge could deem it necessary to lift reporting restrictions further down the line.

Detective Chief Superintendent Jonathan Chadwick, head of Counter Terrorism Policing North West, described the charges as "extremely serious".

"These are extremely serious charges against a young girl and, working closely with Greater Manchester Police, we continue to support the victims and their families and offer support to the wider school community, who have been deeply affected by what happened," he said.

"Although charges have now been secured, our investigation is still ongoing, and we continue to work with local policing colleagues in the Blackley area."

All three who were injured have been released from hospital and suffered no serious injuries, police said at the time.
