The 19-year-old is the youngest skater on the roster set to compete in Fribourg and Zurich, Switzerland, this month. He’ll wear the “C,” with veterans Ryan O’Reilly and John Tavares serving as alternate captains. For Celebrini, it’s a continuation of his meteoric rise through international hockey — from playing at the world under-18 championship to being on Canada’s top line at the Milan Olympics in less than three years. He made his world championship debut at the senior level last spring, playing alongside Sidney Crosby on a team that was upset by Denmark in the quarterfinals, and is the only member of the Olympic team that won silver in Milan who accepted an invitation to this tournament. That’s partly why Celebrini was selected as captain. He had every reason to stay home following a 115-point season for the San Jose Sharks, and he still chose to head to Europe. Beyond that, he’s viewed as the future of Canadian hockey on the men’s side. “He’s an incredible player,” Crosby said earlier this year. “Just his all-around game at his age is pretty impressive. He’s committed defensively; he competes hard. He’s got a pretty mature game for his age.” Celebrini headlines an experienced roster that includes O’Reilly, Tavares, Mark Scheifele, Mathew Barzal, Robert Thomas, Morgan Rielly, Darnell Nurse, Evan Bouchard and Cam Talbot, among others. He led Team Canada with five goals in six games at the Milan Olympics and was named to the tournament all-star team. He also had a massive breakout performance in his second NHL season, finishing fourth in league scoring and being named a finalist for the Ted Lindsay Award as the league’s most outstanding player, as judged by his peers. Celebrini, who wore an “A” for the Sharks last season, is adding off-ice responsibilities to his repertoire as well. “I think he trusts his game, he trusts his process and how he does things, his preparation,” Canadian teammate Nathan MacKinnon said during the Olympics. “It’s impressive. It’s amazing to see someone at 19 be that dialed in to their off-ice, their on-ice, their everything. “I think everyone can learn from him, even though he’s 19. None of us are perfect, and we always can learn new things, and I’m definitely trying to learn from him and everyone that’s here.” Canada opens the world championship with a preliminary round game Thursday against Sweden.
