Former Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez has agreed to leave Al-Hilal less than a year after joining the Saudi Arabian club. Nunez, 26, left Anfield last August for an initial £46million. That fee represented a significant hit on the £64m that Liverpool had stumped up to sign him from Benfica in summer of 2022. While Nunez played a role as the Reds won the Premier League title last season, his time on Merseyside was largely a disappointment. The Uruguay international scored 40 goals in 143 appearances and when Al-Hilal came calling, Liverpool cashed in. After promising first half of the season, Nunez was axed from their squad in order to accommodate January new signing Karim Benzema . Saudi Pro League rules dictate that teams are only allowed to register eight foreign players born before 2003 in their 25-man squads. Nunez was ruthlessly cut and hasn't played for Al-Hilal since February . According to Uruguayan outlet Referi , Nunez has reached an agreement with Al-Hilal to leave at the end of this season. The 26-year-old is desperate for more game time, especially having not started either of Uruguay's friendlies in March. It's said that Nunez has remained professional following his axe and continues to train every day. He earns approximately £400,000 per week in the Middle East, more than double his wage at Liverpool. With six goals and four assists in 16 Saudi Pro League appearances, he's still got his shooting boots. His best season remains his final one with Benfica, scoring 34 times in 41 games and convincing Liverpool to agree a deal which could've risen to £85m had he succeeded. Nunez got off to a rough start at Anfield, head-butting Crystal Palace defender Joachim Andersen on his home debut and receiving a straight red card. Quickly earning a reputation for being inconsistent, he wasn't able to gain Jurgen Klopp's complete trust and fell out of favour towards the end of the German's tenure. The same happened under Arne Slot , who criticised Nunez's 'unacceptable' work rate last season. He then decided to leave, signing a three-year contract with Al-Hilal.
