Junfu Han / Imagn Images Share article3The Detroit Lions are signing All-Pro LB Jack Campbell to a contract extension through the 2030 season, the team announced Thursday, locking up one of their best young talents for the next five seasons. “What’s up, ‘One Pride Nation,’” Campbell said in a video posted by the Lions. “Jack Campbell here. I just wanna let you guys know I signed my extension, I’m excited to be back, I’m excited to be here long-term, now it’s time to win a Super Bowl. Go Lions.” Campbell, selected 18th overall out of Iowa in the 2023 NFL Draft, has lived up to the hype and then some through three seasons. A surprise — and criticized — pick at the time, the Lions raved about Campbell’s combination of size, length, athleticism, instincts, IQ and work ethic. He was an instant contributor upon entering the league, and has emerged as one of the best talents at his position. After a debut season spent playing different positions in Detroit’s defense, Campbell settled in at middle linebacker late in the year and never looked back. He drastically improved in Year 2, and that development paved the way for a true breakout season in 2025. Campbell ranked second in the league in tackles with 176, en route to his first Pro Bowl appearance and a first-team All-Pro nod. When the Lions declined to pick up Campbell’s fifth-year option earlier this month, it wasn’t because they were looking to move on. It was more about the fifth-year option number for a player such as Campbell — traditional off-ball linebackers are grouped with edge rushers on the pay scale. With a Pro Bowl appearance under Campbell’s belt, his fifth-year option was scheduled to be $21.9 million. That would have made him the highest-paid off-ball linebacker in NFL history, alongside a hefty cap hit. An extension always made more sense. The Lions can have some say in how the deal is structured, while Campbell gets the security of a long-term contract and still gets paid handsomely. Based on how the Lions talk about him, this always felt like a matter of time. Campbell has a chance to be named a team captain, and the Lions are expecting him to take the torch from Alex Anzalone as the leader of the defense this season. This is his unit. “I’m putting my eggs in the basket of Jack Campbell in the linebacker room,” Dan Campbell said at the NFL league meeting in March. “Like, it’s time.” Spot the pattern.
