Lionel Messi impressed by Chelsea’s Moroccan Talent Bilal Shah
One of the most exciting young Moroccan talents abroad is beginning to make serious noise.
Bilal Shah, the London-born prospect coming through Chelsea FC’s academy, recently enjoyed a moment that could shape the rest of his young career: being applauded by Lionel Messi during the prestigious Messi Cup (MIC) in Miami.
The memorable scene came after Chelsea’s U15 side defeated Inter Miami CF 3-1, with Messi present and visibly impressed by the young midfielder’s display.
It was a powerful, almost surreal moment for the teenager, one that is likely to remain with him for years.
Developed within Chelsea’s academy, Bilal Shah is gradually becoming one of the standout prospects in the London club’s youth system. Alongside other Moroccan talent Ibrahim Rabbaj represents a new generation of players emerging from one of England’s most prestigious academies.
Born in London, the Anglo-Franco-Moroccan midfielder first joined Chelsea at the age of eight, after attracting attention from several top English clubs, including Arsenal FC, Tottenham Hotspur FC, and Watford FC.
A very versatile midfielder, Shah mainly plays as a number 10, where his technical quality and creativity allow him to dictate play between the lines. He can also operate as a false nine, giving him tactical flexibility and making him a dangerous attacking option.
What stands out most in his game is his vision, close control, and how he thrives in tight spaces.
Comfortable driving the ball forward, he constantly looks to break defensive lines and create openings. His elegant first touch and fluid movement.

He’s also dangerous from set pieces, thanks to the quality of his strike and his confidence in advanced positions.
Despite his young age, Shah already shows notable maturity on the pitch. His assurance and decision-making suggest a player fully aware of both his strengths and his potential.
His rise has also been closely followed in Morocco. Morocco’s U15 national team called him up in 2024, handing him his first experience with the Lionceaux de l’Atlas in friendly matches against Spain U15 team and Mexico U15.
But his final international choice has not yet been officially settled. And if Lionel Messi’s applause is any indication, Chelsea and perhaps Morocco may be looking at a very special talent.
