The 22-year-old has made just four Premier League starts this season as Daniel Farke’s side successfully avoided relegation and as such, sources at Elland Road expect there will be interest in the Italian this summer. The Italian’s contract expires in June 2028, having signed fresh terms in August 2024 with the club. Gnonto started the first three league games of the season, but he was dropped to the bench in the fourth fixture before spending two months out with a calf injury. The pivot to a 5-3-2 system in November made it even harder for the winger to force his way into the team. This bit-part role follows 48 starts across the club’s two years in the Championship. He has struggled to nail down regular starts under Farke. Freiburg finished seventh in this season’s Bundesliga, qualifying for next year’s Europa Conference League, but if they win Wednesday’s Europa League final against Aston Villa, they will play in the Champions League. Gnonto first arrived at Leeds in September 2022 from Zurich for a fee in the region of £5million. He was bought as an option for their under-21 side, but he swiftly graduated into a first team which was bound for relegation from the Premier League. He has gone on to make 146 appearances for the club, scoring 23 goals. He emerged as a 60th-minute substitute in Sunday’s win over Brighton & Hove Albion and will hope to play in the final match of the season at West Ham United. Spot the pattern.
