Should he get one?The Greek international has spent the season on loan at Roma in Italy Paolo Bruno/Getty Images Share articleKostas Tsimikas is targeting pre-season as the period to force his way back into the Liverpool first-team squad. The left-back returns to Merseyside when his loan at Roma expires at the end of the campaign and will be considered as part of next season’s plans following the exit of Andy Robertson. Tsimikas has one year left on his contract and wants to compete for a place with Milos Kerkez, who is the recognised first-choice. Liverpool explored recalling the 29-year-old in January as Tottenham Hotspur pushed to sign Robertson, but Roma refused to sanction an early return as they could not find a replacement. The Greek international has since played a bit-part role in Italy, featuring in 18 of the 33 games in Serie A this season, but is set to have a chance to resurrect his Liverpool career with changes expected ahead of the 2026-27 season. Liverpool are gearing up for another important summer in the transfer window and are yet to finalise plans to replace the Scotland international, who leaves at the end of the season after nine years. The option to reintegrate Tsimikas could be useful as there are priorities elsewhere. It could also be viewed as a sensible consideration because he’s experienced, popular and knows the club well. There would be little harm in turning to a familiar figure as back-up while the search for a younger alternative continues. Tsimikas also understands the role of competing with Kerkez, rather than expecting to start, which is why there were conversations over a return during the last window. Despite a difficult season at Roma where he has not fully slotted into manager Gian Piero Gasperini’s system, Tsimikas has remained fit and available for every league game. As part of their long-term planning, Liverpool continue to monitor other left-backs. The importance of strengthening elsewhere is far greater, especially as the faith will continue to be placed in Kerkez at left-back. Liverpool need new additions across the front line to cover for the departure of Mohamed Salah and could also do with a refresh in midfield and extra support at right-back. Injuries to Conor Bradley, Joe Gomez and Jeremie Frimpong left the team light on right-sided cover this season but the return of Giovanni Leoni and addition of Jeremy Jacquet — both right-footed centre halves — may provide extra cover next season. The difficulties of signing full-backs on both sides of the pitch was felt this season, so a short-term fix at left-back may be a sensible route if there’s no obvious addition that would significantly strengthen the squad. Slot name-checked Tsimikas recently although didn’t expand on any further plans. He said: “I think in the four windows I’m here now we’ve had a net spend of £150million. So that says what kind of club we are. We know that Robbo is going to leave, we know that Mo is going to leave, so that means changing two players. “We also know that Kostas Tsimikas comes back. I think the first aim is to see how we are acting in the position of Mo, if we want to replace that with a similar player or do it differently. “For the rest I don’t think at this moment of time there’s a chance of other players leaving. “Of course there’s the Ibou (Konate) contract situation, so then there might not be such a big need for trading a lot if you don’t need to bring a lot of new players in.” Spot the pattern.
