Kenyan FA President Suspended Over Financial Misconduct Allegations

Rabat – The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has suspended its president, Hussein Mohamed, along with acting chief executive Dennis Gichuru and executive committee member Abdallah Yusuf Ibrahim, following accusations of financial mismanagement linked to funds for the African Nations Championship (CHAN).

The suspension was announced after a meeting of the FKF’s national executive committee on Friday. 

Officials cited concerns over the handling of 42 million Kenyan shillings (around $3.5 million) allocated for CHAN. Vice President Macdonald Maringa has been appointed interim leader while investigations continue.

The decision also included freezing all bank accounts tied to Mohamed in his official capacity. 

An independent auditor will be appointed to review funds received from the Confederation of African Football (CAF), FIFA, and Kenya’s Ministry of Sports.

In its statement, the committee stressed that the measures were taken to safeguard the integrity of Kenyan football and restore public trust. 

Investigations will examine possible mismanagement, conflicts of interest, and irregularities in contracts.

Mohamed rejected the accusations, describing them as an attempt to damage his reputation. He insisted that his efforts to fight corruption within the federation would not be undermined.

Context

The suspension comes at a sensitive time for Kenyan football. The country is one of three hosts, alongside Tanzania and Uganda, for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). 

Concerns have already been raised about delays in stadium construction and infrastructure readiness.

Just two days before his suspension, Mohamed had met with a CAF delegation in Nairobi to discuss preparations for AFCON 2027. 

The meeting pointed out the urgency of accelerating work on facilities and ensuring compliance with international standards.

Kenya’s football leadership now faces a dual challenge: addressing corruption allegations while preparing for one of the continent’s biggest tournaments. 

The outcome of the investigations will be critical not only for the federation’s credibility but also for the country’s ability to deliver a successful AFCON.
