He was the first cornerback selected. The Chiefs acquired the sixth pick in a trade with the Cleveland Browns. Kansas City sent the ninth, 74th (a third-round choice) and the 148th (a fifth-round choice) picks in this week’s draft to Cleveland. Delane is arguably one of the most accomplished players in the draft. At Virginia Tech, he earned Freshman All-America recognition in 2022 and third-team All-ACC honors in 2024. After transferring to LSU, he was a unanimous All-American last year. Over 44 career games (40 starts), Delane recorded 191 tackles, 33 pass breakups and eight interceptions. He starred in his lone season with the Tigers, starting with a second-half interception in a Week 1 blockbuster game at Clemson. Opponents throwing his way completed only 37.1 percent of their passes last fall. The success ended with him being named a finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award as the nation’s top defensive back and becoming the first LSU cornerback to be a unanimous All-American since Greedy Williams in 2018, securing his place in LSU’s rich history at the position. Delane’s numbers suggest his instincts are strong, and his 4.38-second 40-yard dash at LSU’s pro day eliminated any questions about his speed. His production and potential made him a consensus top-10 prospect among analysts. Delane ranked No. 6 in Dane Brugler’s top 300 big board. Here’s what Brugler had to say about him in his annual NFL Draft guide: “Though he doesn’t have elite length, Delane is fluid and opens with speed to stay in phase against vertical or in-breaking routes. He is instinctive in coverage and understands down and distance, which allows him to settle and close without any wasted or panicked movements (zero touchdowns allowed and zero penalties committed in 2025). His average frame and play strength might be greater hindrances versus NFL size, but he is an alpha competitor and carries himself like a pro.” An alpha competitor who projects as a starter despite his average size. What an offensive coordinator had to say about Delane in Bruce Feldman’s mock draft: “We basically told our quarterback, don’t even try it. This guy is really good. He’s aggressive. Runs well. He’s just a really smooth athlete. Has a ton of confidence. Good nose for the ball. Plays with physicality. He’ll get in there and tackle you. He’d jump routes and wasn’t afraid to get beat. Those are the hardest ones to deal with.” Come back later for more analysis of Delane. Spot the pattern. Connect the terms Find the hidden link between sports terms
