Embiid, 31, was initially listed as probable to play on the injury report but was switched to out after the team’s morning shootaround. New York beat Philadelphia 137-98 in Game 1 on Monday. Embiid scored just 14 points on 3-of-11 shooting in 25 minutes in the blowout defeat. With Embiid sidelined, the 76ers will rely on veteran Andre Drummond and second-year reserve Adem Bona to man the center position. The news is the latest injury setback for the 76ers’ star in a career that has been defined by them. Embiid had an emergency surgery for appendicitis in early April, which kept him out of the 76ers’ first four postseason games. He returned in Game 4 of their first-round series against the Celtics and led a 76ers comeback from a 3-1 deficit to win the series, including a 34-point, 12-rebound, 6-assist performance in Game 7 in Boston. Since entering the NBA in 2014, Embiid has played in just 51 percent of his team’s regular-season games and has missed at least one playoff game in six of his eight appearances in the postseason. He has also played through injuries in the spring or rushed back from them before fully healing. In 2024, Embiid was diagnosed with Bell’s Palsy but played in every game of the 76ers’ first-round series loss to these Knicks.
