The snooker icons clashed repeatedly throughout their careers, including in the World Championship (1984) and UK Championship (1987) finals.‌When the stakes were highest, Davis, the dominant force of the 80s, typically prevailed, much to the annoyance of White, who suffered defeat in all six of his World Championship finals, including four against the player of the 90s, Stephen Hendry.‌However, it was Davis rather than Hendry who irritated the Whirlwind the most, though he still held enormous respect for the six-time world champion. Evaluating the greats of the sport, including close mate Ronnie O'Sullivan, White told Ally McCoist on TNT Sport's Snooker Breakdown last year: "I think with Davis, he had that smirk. You wanted to hit him across the head with the cue.
