Javier Saviola backs Argentina to defend FIFA World Cup title in 2026

Javier Saviola believes Argentina has what it takes to defend its FIFA World Cup title and expects a new generation of stars to emerge at the 2026 tournament. In an interview with CGTN Sports Scene's Mike Fox, the former Argentina and Barcelona striker discussed his country's title defense, the expanded format and the young talents to watch.

Saviola, who played for Argentina at the 2026 World Cup in Germany, said representing his nation on football's biggest stage remains one of the highlights of his career.

He also welcomed the expanded tournament, saying the longer schedule will place greater physical demands on players, while giving fans the opportunity to watch more matches.

Among the players he is most excited to see is Barcelona teenager Lamine Yamal, whom he believes has all the qualities to become one of the world's best players in the coming years. Saviola also predicted Spanish striker Yamal and France captain Kylian Mbappe could develop a rivalry similar to the link Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have shared for nearly two decades.

The 44-year-old went on to encourage today's players to maintain a healthy relationship with social media, saying he preferred to stay close to family and friends while avoiding unnecessary distractions during his career.

After naming France, Spain, Morocco and the Netherlands as major contenders, Saviola also expressed optimism about Argentina's chances.

"We Argentinians are full of hope and belief that Argentina can win the World Cup again," he said.
