Iranian Patrol Boats Reportedly Fire on Oil Tanker in Strait of Hormuz
Rabat – Iranian patrol boats opened fire on an oil tanker early Saturday in the Strait of Hormuz, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).
UKMTO Iranian gunboats targeted the tanker while moving through the narrow waterway. No immediate reports confirmed major damage or injuries. The agency warned ships in the area to stay alert and report any unusual activity.
The attack comes just days after Iranian officials said they would keep the strait open to international shipping. However, Iran announced today imposing “strict control” over the strait as the US continues to enforce a blockade on Iranian ports.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important oil transit routes in the world. Any disruption there can quickly affect oil prices and global trade. Tankers and cargo ships regularly pass through the area that connects producers in the Gulf to international markets.
Tensions have been rising after Donald Trump warned on Friday that the US would continue blocking Iranian ports unless a broader agreement is reached. The US has accused Iran of threatening regional stability, while Iran has pushed back against sanctions and military pressure.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) said today that the US continues to enforce its declared “maritime blockade against ships entering or exiting Iranian ports and coastal areas.”
Shipping companies are now closely monitoring the situation. Some vessels have reportedly slowed or changed routes as a precaution. Others are waiting for clearer security guarantees before entering the strait.
Merchant vessels have reportedly received a radio message from the Iranian navy declaring the Strait of Hormuz shut again.
Recent images from the region show long lines of oil tankers and cargo ships waiting near the entrance of the waterway.
There has been no immediate official response from Iranian authorities about the reported attack.
