Italy’s team of the decade regain Scudetto after 2025 heartbreakInter were crowned champions with three league games remaining Marco Luzzani/Getty Images Share articleInter have won the Serie A title following Sunday night’s 2-0 victory against Parma. The win gave Cristian Chivu’s side an unassailable 12-point lead over second-place Napoli, the outgoing league champions. Inter suffered heartbreak last season when they missed out on the title by one point to Antonio Conte’s side, and were defeated 5-0 by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final. This season has been less dramatic; Chivu — who replaced Simone Inzaghi in the dugout — has delivered the league title with three rounds of matches remaining, but his side underwhelmed in Europe with a Champions League play-off phase exit to Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt. The 45-year-old Romanian could yet lead Inter to a domestic league and cup double, with his side to face Lazio in the Coppa Italia final on May 13. This is Inter’s 21st league title and their third in the last six seasons, moving them two clear of city rivals Milan as the nation’s second-most successful side, behind 36-time champions Juventus. Cristian Chivu has come full circle. His first senior job in football came at Parma last season where he was interim coach. The Romanian kept them up on the final day before his investiture as Simone Inzaghi’s successor at Inter. A year later, in his first full season in a Serie A dug-out, he guided the Nerazzurri to their third title in five years with a win over his old team, Parma. This was no small feat, even if Inter largely strolled to it. The consensus view after Inter’s 5-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in last season’s the Champions League final was that of an old team reaching the end of a cycle. Captain Lautaro Martinez seemed to fall out with Hakan Calhanoglu at the Club World Cup. It was a difficult situation to manage. A drop-off was forecast, especially amid fiercer competition anticipated from holders Napoli who had added Kevin de Bruyne to their ranks. Don’t get me wrong, this season has not all been plain sailing for Chivu. Inter’s record in the big games brought scrutiny as did their elimination from the Champions League at the hands of Bodo/Glimt. In the spring, the atmosphere around the club was heavy with disappointment even though they were top of the table and still on course for a domestic double. This gloomy mood coincided, discordantly, with Inter effectively breaking the back of the title race with 14 wins in 15 games. While they left the door ever so slightly ajar for Milan and Napoli to sneak back into it, the bolt slid across it in early April. A 21st Scudetto has felt inevitable for a month, bringing a general sense of ennui to the season in Serie A. It is a compliment to Chivu if the straightforwardness with which Inter have won the league has made it largely forgettable for everybody else. Inter have tried to do their part to make the season exciting, scoring more than 80 goals. Only Bayern and Barcelona have been more prolific in their respective leagues. A goal difference of +51 is frankly embarrassing for the competition when you consider how far off they are from matching it. Inter are the team of the decade in Serie A. They have won under different owners and coaches, and while the latest refereeing scandal in Italian football has placed them under scrutiny — though not investigation — nobody is in any doubt about their worthiness as champions.
