As they've watched her go from ambitious law student to Second Lady, some of her former classmates have reportedly turned to Signal to privately compare notes about the woman they once knew. And they don't appear to see Usha as a wife who simply followed JD Vance into politics. Speaking to Vanity Fair, one former classmate pushed back strongly against the idea that Usha has been 'silenced' by her husband. 'It's patronizing to say that she's been silenced. She has chosen this.' Another ex-classmate went further, saying Usha formed Vance into a political powerhouse. 'She built JD into this creation of the coastal Acela corridor,' the classmate said, describing Usha as someone who 'radiates authority and a sense of purpose and mission.' The comments paint a picture of a woman who was ambitious long before she became a fixture in Washington — and who saw something in JD that others may not have seen at the time. But while JD would go on to become one of the most outspoken figures in Republican politics, Usha was harder to read. She rarely gossiped and rarely voiced strong political opinions. According to one former classmate, she was intensely focused on achievement. 'She was the quintessential, ubiquitous Yale Law student,' the classmate said, describing her as a 'gold star chaser.' 'Usha took it to the next level. I never understood why she was trying so hard.' Another Yale friend said Usha 'saw tremendous potential in JD.' Today, that comment takes on a different meaning. The transformation has left some of their former classmates struggling to understand how the couple they knew ended up at the heart of MAGA politics. JD was once a vocal critic of Trump. Now he is one of Trump's most important political allies. Usha, meanwhile, went from elite law student and former Democrat to Second Lady of the United States. They remember her as ambitious, highly driven and determined to succeed. And someone who kept her political views largely to herself, but who clearly knew what she wanted. That makes it harder for some of her former classmates to believe she simply went along with JD's political transformation. Whether Usha personally agrees with every one of JD's political positions is another matter. But they do seem to agree on one thing: Usha Vance is not simply a passenger in her husband's political career. The Second Lady gave birth to her fourth child, a baby boy named Alec Neel Vance, on July 19.
