By WAYNE FLOWER, SENIOR NEWS REPORTER, AUSTRALIA Published: 02:14, 12 July 2026 | Updated: 02:15, 12 July 2026 The judge who sentenced mushroom killer Erin Patterson to life behind bars has opened up about the case and why he retired just months after jailing her. Justice Christopher Beale became a household name around the world after presiding over Patterson's trial - and said it was the highlight of his entire career. He called his time on the Supreme Court 'a real privilege' but said he was 'very comfortable' walking away after steering the epic ten-week trial to its conclusion. Patterson was found guilty of the murders of Don and Gail Patterson, and Gail's sister, Heather Wilkinson.  They died after consuming death cap mushrooms served in Beef Wellingtons during lunch at her Leongatha home on July 29, 2023. Pastor Ian Wilkinson survived the lunch despite becoming critically ill, with Patterson also convicted of his attempted murder. Justice Beale sentenced Patterson to life in prison on September 8, but set a non-parole period of 33 years.  The former judge gave an insight into his life on the bench for the case, which contrasted with the fevered media scrum outside the courthouse  Justice Christopher Beale became a household name around the world after presiding over mushroom chef Erin Patterson's trial and said it was the highlight of his entire career  Erin Patterson was found guilty of the murders of Don and Gail Patterson, and Gail's sister, Heather Wilkinson  Justice Beale revealed he got through the pressure-cooker trial, held in the country town of Morwell in Victoria's east, 'mainly by working hard,' he said. His routine was famously low-key for a case that had the world watching - early nights, cooking his own dinner, and unwinding with a PG Wodehouse novel after long days in court.  Justice Beale said he went home to Melbourne for the weekends and would return to the Gippsland town on Sunday nights to prepare for the long week ahead.  'It was heard there, and that was Erin Patterson's wish, and it was appropriate that it be heard near the location of the crimes,' he said. The former judge spoke out on the legal podcast William and Lonsdale almost exactly a year after the trial wrapped up.  Justice Beale was praised by legal commentators for keeping proceedings on track, overcoming a series of setbacks that threatened to derail the case. 'It meant that while I was there in the country I could just concentrate on work,' he said. 'There was usually some issue around the media that I had to consider, and then I might say some things publicly before we brought the jury in. Justice Beale sentenced Erin Patterson to life in prison on September 8, but set a non-parole period of 33 years  'Most of the coverage was very good and reasonable.' Less than three months after handing down his sentence, Justice Beale quietly retired from the Supreme Court last December - hanging up his robes for good after more than a decade on the bench.  But just as he retired, Patterson launched a 'Hail Mary' appeal against both her conviction and the sentence he'd handed down. Patterson's appeal is scheduled to be heard in the Victorian Court of Appeal next month, in what has been branded a 'doomed exercise' by legal insiders. Due to the appeals, Justice Beale said he was 'limited' in what he could say about the Patterson case, but told the podcast he believed the jury had acted 'conscientiously' during the trial.  It wasn't all smooth sailing for the judge though, who was forced to dismiss a juror midway through the trial. Justice Beale told the jury he had been alerted to the fact that a male juror had been discussing the trial outside of court. 'A few moments ago, I discharged juror 84,' he said then. Don and Gail Patterson were murdered by Erin Patterson with a poisoned beef Wellington  Heather Wilkinson did not survive Patterson's lethal lunch  'I did so because, as I explained to him, I received information that he had been discussing the case with family and friends, contrary to my instructions.' He told the jury the information he received about the juror seemed 'credible' and that he therefore had no choice but to let him go.  Justice Beale said his swift action should act as a warning to the remaining jurors.  'I don't want to sound like a broken record but only discuss the case with your fellow jurors in the privacy of the jury room, and don't get into a discussion with anybody about the fact that juror 84 was discharged,' he told the jury. While Justice Beale's role in the Patterson trial was one for the ages, it had not been his first high-profile case.   In 2019, he was the judge who sentenced Borce Ristevski to nine years behind bars for killing his wife, a term later increased to 13 years after a Court of Appeal ruling. As a prosecutor in 2010, he led the case against a pair of swingers who were found guilty of killing Melbourne businessman Herman Rockefeller. Now six months into retirement, he stands by the decision. 'I've spent 40 years as a lawyer, my wife and I are in good health,' he said. He added that the couple wanted to move into 'another productive phase' of life on their own terms rather than 'stumbling into it'. Sorry we are not currently accepting comments on this article.
