According to the latest report by NielsenIQ (NIQ) and World Data Lab, India is estimated to have around 2.6 crore affluent consumers in 2026. That number is projected to rise to 10.8 crore by 2036, an addition of about 8.2 crore consumers over the decade. China, meanwhile, is projected to add around 6.2 crore affluent consumers, taking its affluent consumer population to 10.3 crore by 2036. This would put India marginally ahead of China in terms of the number of consumers falling into the report's affluent category. The report's definition of an affluent consumer is important. It refers to people who spend more than $90 a day. The classification is therefore based on daily spending rather than income, wealth or net worth. This means the projection should not be interpreted as India having 10.8 crore "rich people" by 2036. It indicates that the number of people crossing the report's spending threshold could rise sharply. India is also estimated to have 64.9 crore “core consumers” in 2026, defined as people spending between $13 and $90 a day. This is a separate category and is not included in the affluent-consumer count. Among the countries separately identified in the report, India is projected to record the largest increase in affluent consumers between 2026 and 2036. The country is expected to add 8.2 crore affluent consumers during this period, compared with China's projected addition of 6.2 crore. The US is expected to continue having the world's largest affluent consumer population in 2036, with 23.1 crore people in the category. The report's projections put Germany at 3.2 crore affluent consumers in 2036, Japan at 3 crore, the UK at 2.7 crore and Brazil at 2.3 crore. Globally, the affluent consumer population is projected to increase from 65.7 crore in 2026 to 102.5 crore in 2036.WHY INDIA'S CONSUMER MARKET COULD CHANGE The report classifies India as a “volume growth” market, pointing to its rising population and middle class. As the number of consumers with higher spending power increases, the nature of consumption could also evolve. The report says that in some categories, growth will be driven by broader household participation, affordability and distribution. In other categories, however, growth could increasingly come from premium purchases, as newly affluent consumers look for products offering quality, convenience or status. This could create a larger opportunity for companies targeting India's premium and aspirational consumer segments. The report also carries an important caveat for consumer companies: higher spending power does not necessarily mean consumers will always choose the most expensive product. Among consumers identified as "upgrade consumers", 60% said they focus on value for money, while 46% said they are willing to pay for convenience. The report also notes that even consumers willing to spend more may trade down when the premium offered by a product is unclear or when a cheaper alternative appears sufficient. Brands will have to demonstrate why consumers should pay more.AFFLUENT CONSUMERS PACK A BIG SPENDING PUNCH The growing importance of affluent consumers can also be seen in global spending numbers. Although affluent consumers are far fewer than the 410 crore core consumers estimated globally in 2026, they are projected to account for $35.9 trillion in spending this year. That compares with $31.6 trillion for the much larger core-consumer group. The report comes against a backdrop of rising prices. Global fast-moving consumer goods prices increased 26% between 2021 and 2025, according to NIQ. For India, the projected rise in affluent consumers therefore represents not just a larger customer base, but potentially a major shift in where consumer spending comes from.
