Imran’s cases will be fixed after Eid, CJP assures PTI

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Yahya Afridi on Wednesday assured the PTI leadership that its cases concerning access to a personal physician, family members and counsel representing the party’s founder and former premier, Imran Khan, would be fixed soon after the upcoming Eidul Azha.

The assurance was given by the CJP during a meeting with PTI General Secretary Salman Akram Raja, who was leading a brief sit-in outside the Supreme Court building soon after attending an Islamabad High Court (IHC) hearing in the £190 million corruption case against the Imran and his wife, Bushra Bibi.

Raja later told the media that the CJP had assured him that all petitions and applications relating to Imran would be scheduled for hearing after Eid falling on May 27.

The PTI general secretary said he had informed the CJP about the pending appeal before the Supreme Court since October 2025 against the IHC order regarding permission to access Imran, who was incarcerated at Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail.

Likewise, another application on behalf of Imran’s sisters was also pending before the SC and not been heard.

Raja said the CJP had issued necessary instructions to senior officers of the SC for the fixing of the cases.

He added that he was confident that the PTI would receive a favourable decision regarding permission to meet Imran soon after Eid.

Later, a senior member of the PTI legal team, Intezar Panjutha, told Dawn that the lawyers staging a sit-in outside the Supreme Court premises had called off their protest and left while chanting slogans in favour of their leader.

Earlier, Dr Uzma Khan, one of the PTI founder’s sisters, had also challenged the IHC ruling refusing facilities such as shifting Mr Khan to Shifa International Hospital in Isla­m­abad, besides allowing him access to personal physicians, family members and lawyers.

The petition had also pleaded for the present petition to be converted into an appeal and for directions to be issued for the medical examination of Imran by physicians of his choice, including Dr Khurram Mirza, Dr Asim Yusuf, Dr Faisal Sultan and Dr Samina Niazi, on an immediate basis.

Disposal of appeals

Meanwhile, a three-judge Supreme Court bench, headed by the CJP, also disposed of the appeals filed by the Punjab prosecution seeking cancellation of bail granted to PTI leader Ejaz Ahmed Chaudhry, who was involved in the May 9 cases.

During the hearing, Punjab Additional Prosecutor General Ahmed Raza Gilani appeared before the court and stated that the Supreme Court had directed the completion of trials in the May 9 cases within four months, while decisions had already been made in eight out of the 10 cases against Chaudhry.

The court was informed that the accused were in jail, the bail had not been misused, and the cases were continuing to be heard.

Later, the SC upheld the high court’s decision to grant bail to the PTI leader in two cases.
