Iconic Green Welly Stop put up for sale after six decades

But now, one of Scotland’s best-known roadside destinations has gone on the market for the first time since it was founded in 1965. The Green Welly Stop, in Tyndrum, Stirlingshire, was the brainchild of Edinburgh couple Betty and Les Gosden when they moved to the village with their son Lamond. What started as a humble post office and a general store with a couple of fuel pumps soon grew to a family affair, with daughter Lesley and Derek Wilkie joining the business before their son Iain and daughter and son-in-law Fiona and Edward Robertson also came on board. Today, the venue is regarded as a halfway stop for those on the West Highland Way or heading up or down the A82, with walkers, motorbikes, campervans and coaches a familiar sight. With more than 6,000 vehicles stopping daily, the freehold business comes with two cafes, retail shops, whisky off-sales and facilities for travellers. It also has unopposed fuel sales, with the nearest rival a distant 21 miles away. But after more than 61 years of family ownership, the iconic landmark is now for sale through Christie & Co.
