Published: 12:53, 13 July 2026 | Updated: 12:58, 13 July 2026 A man wanted over the murder of his wife and two children in Bedfordshire was 'armed and dangerous' when elite cops dramatically arrested him in South Africa. Fugitive Mark Tshuma – who appeared in court today – was cornered by elite cops at a house in a smart suburb of Johannesburg after a tip off. Members of a highly trained armed police unit known as the Hawks swooped on Friday night following an intensive operation whilst working closely with Interpol officers. When the suspected triple killer was forced to the ground and handcuffed he was found to be in possession of an illegally bought handgun and two live bullets. A source close to the operation said: 'We were told Tshuma visited a township on arrival in Johannesburg and had bought himself a handgun and some ammunition. 'So he was armed and potentially dangerous when the officers went in. 'The fact that there were only two bullets in the magazine would suggest that he was not looking to take anyone else out but was potentially a danger to himself. 'You can buy a 9mm gun as easily as buying a stolen TV in a township and as he had got himself a weapon he could have bought as many bullets as he wanted. Mark Tshuma (pictured) was seen in Johannesburg Central District Magistrate's Court today  He is alleged to have killed his wife Zandile Tshuma, 42, known as Zandile (left), and daughters Nala, 5 (centre) and Natalie, 15 (right)  Cops who arrested him said he was armed at the time  'To me that suggests he had suicide in mind rather than a dramatic shoot out' he said. South African police revealed outside Johannesburg Magistrates Court that Tshuma was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and two rounds of ammunition. Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said: 'We are now told that upon arrival in South Africa he visited one of the townships where a firearm was sold to him along with bullets. 'We have a separate investigation into who those suspects are who sold him an unlicensed firearm and a number of lines of inquiry are being followed on that. 'I can also confirm that we have received a provisional extradition request from Interpol in Manchester through to Interpol in Pretoria to return him to the UK. 'This would include the warrant of arrest issued by UK authorities and we need to receive the full case file and supporting evidence for the extradition' she said. Detective Inspector Lee Martin, the senior investigating officer into the three murders, said the bodies were found last Tuesday and that Tshuma fled from the UK. He checked into a hotel in the upmarket Sandton area then moved from address to address in the Kensington suburb until he was arrested by police on Friday night. Tshuma then went to a township to find a handgun and ammunition for it. Mark fled Bedfordshire and flew to South Africa  Police hunted for Mark for five days before he was found  A forensics police officer was pictured at the property where the bodies were found on Monday Illegal hand guns are rife in townships, with a used weapon costing as little as £30 to £100 if it has been used previously in murders or bank robberies complete with bullets. Handguns that are 'clean' and cannot be traced to any other crimes cost between £350 and £500 and South African police seize about 100 weapons a day on the streets. Last Thursday the police destroyed 12,000 illegal hand guns as part of the UN's International Gun Destruction Day but tens of thousands more remain on the streets. Brigadier Mathe said Tshuma was in court today on a charge for extradition for three murders in the United Kingdom and possession of an unlicensed gun and bullets. Tshuma is wanted for murdering wife Zandile, 42, and daughters Natalie, 15, and Nala, 5, who were discovered at their £1.3m home in Great Denham last Monday. The £100,000 a year businessman is a British citizen of Zimbabwean heritage and sparked a 5 day manhunt before he was cornered and arrested at his hideout. A close friend who visited 'Mark' two weeks before the murders said: 'He was very upset that his wife wanted a divorce and got himself into a real state over it. 'I told him to leave it but he said he couldn't live without her and the kids' he said. Bedfordshire Police previously described its investigation as 'incredibly complex' as tributes were left outside the house last Wednesday Mark was a senior IT executive at the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales Family members of Mark Tshuma, a British citizen of Zimbabwean origin, seen after his appearens in a court, in Johannesburg, Monday, July 13, 2026 Both daughters attended private schools in the area with Natalie at £20,000 a year Bedford Girls School and Nala at nearby Pilgrims Pre-Preparatory School. The divorcing couple had recently put their upmarket detached 4-bedroom, four bathroom property up for sale as they prepared to go their separate ways. Tshuma was a senior IT executive earning £100,000 a year as Head of Development & Support at the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales. Wife Zandile was a cyber security expert and had told friends her husband was 'controlling' and was planning a life away from him when she was murdered.
