A suspected cannibal has been arrested after allegedly digging up and eating corpses from the hospital where he worked.

The 30-year-old man was taken into custody in Budapest on June 17 following a tip received by Hungary's National Bureau of Investigation.

Information had reached officers suggesting the patient transport employee was keeping human remains at both his workplace and private address.

A search of his flat yielded disturbing findings.

Detectives recovered multiple skulls, an intact lower leg, a hand, and skin which had been preserved and reassembled into a face.

A suitcase full of bones was also discovered at the property.

A heart was also found in a jar, though police have yet to confirm whether it came from a human or an animal.

The man currently faces allegations of unlawfully handling human remains.

Hungarian cannibal

A police statement issued on Tuesday said: "The Life Protection Department of the National Bureau of Investigation began an investigation after receiving information that a patient transport worker at a Budapest hospital was storing human body parts both at work and at home."

Under interrogation, the accused acknowledged gathering the remains - and said he held a deep interest in the human body.

He is said to have admitted to cooking and consuming portions of the collected body parts.

Authorities described the suspect as being "passionate about anatomy and pathology, and likes to dissect animals".

Detectives believe the man acquired the corpses through his job at the hospital - as well as by digging up graves in neglected burial grounds across Hungary and neighbouring Slovakia.

Electronic devices including computers, laptops, tablets and mobile phones were confiscated from his home.

Forensic specialists will now examine all recovered remains to determine exactly where they came from.

And further charges may be brought against the suspect once their tests are complete.

Hospital

Police have indicated they cannot exclude the possibility that the man may have connections to homicides.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to establish the full extent of the alleged offences, with officers are particularly focused on tracing where each body part originated.

Authorities have not disclosed which Budapest hospital employed the suspect.

No information has been released regarding how long the man may have been collecting remains before his arrest.
