Home Office ‘determined’ to finally deport asylum seeker jailed five times - a YEAR after first trying to boot him out

The Home Office said it is "determined" to finally deport an asylum seeker who has been jailed five times - a year after he was first told he would be booted out of Britain.

Iranian small boat migrant Farhad Hosnavi caused £10,000 worth of damage after smashing up a hotel of asylum seekers, as well as a police station, all within his two years of living in Britain.

He was subsequently warned that a 12-month prison sentence for smashing up an asylum hotel back could kickstart deportation procedures in May last year.

Despite the explicit warning, the 27-year-old still remains within Britain's borders.

Hosnavi was first thrown behind British bars in April 2024 for causing damage to a Norwich Holiday Inn Express Hotel which housed asylum seekers.

Three months prior, he was housed in the accommodation - but was given the boot when found to be in possession of a knife.

And, a mere month after he was released from prison, the illegal arrival was handed another 16-week-long prison sentence after smashing in the hotel's windows again.

When he was released in December 2024, Hosnavi, once again, smashed 14 of the hotel's windows as he bellowed "f**k the police".

The December incident left hotel staff saying they no longer felt safe due to fears of further attacks.

He was handed a 12-month-long prison sentence for the £5,000 damage at the same time he was informed of his looming deportation order.

When he was released on April 28, he smashed the glass doors of Bethel Street police station - and then returned again to do the same after spending eight weeks behind bars.

Earlier this week, Hosnavi pleaded guilty to the criminal damage in court, while his lawyer explained that he was only carrying out the offences to get accommodation.

During the hearing, he pleaded to be sent back to Germany where has "settled status".

Julie Adams said: "He is frustrated by the lack of accommodation and homelessness. He had no intention of hurting anyone but just simply wants to go back to prison.”

A Home Office spokesman said: “Farhad Hosnavi is subject to deportation action. We will do everything in our power to remove foreign criminals off British soil.

"Deportations of foreign national offenders are up 32 per cent, with more than 8,700 deported since government came into power.

"In cases where a foreign offender cannot be immediately removed, electronic tagging and strict conditions are imposed. If these are breached, an individual will be put behind bars."

Just yesterday, the Home Office was warned that control was "all but lost" in a damning new report by the Public Accounts Committee.

Parliament's spending watchdog delivered a scathing "end-to-end snapshot" of Shabana Mahmood's asylum system, warning mistakes made by civil servants are doomed to be repeated.

Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown, Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, said: "At the time of our inquiry, control of it had been all but lost. The focus on short-term, reactive 'fixes' has left the Government chasing after pressures pushed from one part of the system to the next."

He slammed the lack of a "clear strategy uniting efforts", adding communication between departments and local authorities is "patchy at best".
