Video released by the department shows ESU officers carefully inching along the bridge's suspension cables toward the woman, who was sitting on a narrow steel beam near the bridge's towers, which rise about 276 feet above the roadway. For nearly an hour, the specially trained officers spoke calmly with the woman, urging her to accept help as traffic backed up below and crowds gathered to watch the tense rescue. Video then showed several officers, clipped into safety lines, slowly escorting the woman across the narrow beam before lifting her back onto the bridge. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch praised the officers Thursday while sharing footage of the rescue on X.
