Heartbroken relative tells why he believes Killarney murder victim Jamey Carney became a target as he reveals the one thing that repeatedly caused alarm among those closest to the tragic young mother of one

Published: 21:35, 28 July 2026 | Updated: 21:35, 28 July 2026 A heartbroken relative of murder victim Jamey Carney has revealed the 43-year-old American woman was targeted twice during the last two years of her life by two unscrupulous Middle Eastern men who were determined to swindle her out of a $1million inheritance. Her family have now urged gardaí to do ‘everything in their power’ to bring the man suspected of killing the mother of one to justice. Speaking from his home in New York, Ms Carney’s cousin Ryan Fox told the Mail: ‘I would ask the police to please, please, use everything in their power to make sure this guy doesn’t walk free because I would like to visit him in prison one day because I’d like to have some words with him. ‘I’m sure they are doing their diligence… This guy needs to be brought to justice and it can’t be in that place [Jordan].  'Anyone who came along, who seemed like the one, she was going to adopt their personality and their culture,' her cousin shared 'He needs to be brought either to Ireland or the States.  'The longer that goes by… he is going to find a legal way to weasel out of this.  'And I would fear this is going to happen to someone else. ‘Jamey was a very sensitive, left-wing, equal rights, liberal person.  'She was a single mother in a country that she was not raised in and probably looking for a little support, looking for someone to be a male role model for her daughter. ‘My opinion is Jamey was a vulnerable girl who has never had a positive male role model and she was looking for love in all the wrong places.  'So anyone who came along, who seemed like the one, she was going to adopt their personality and their culture. ‘Before she was involved with this man [the suspect] she was romantically involved with another man of Middle East ethnicity and apparently this guy tried to scam her of her inheritance of about $1million. 'My aunt Cathy, Jamey’s mother, was calling me [at the time] because she was very, very, concerned. ‘She actually had to say something to this person because she had a feeling they were trying to take advantage and this person even had the nerve to tell my aunt that it was none of her business. ‘The chief suspect had just asked her for money… My aunt Cathy had reservations about this guy. ‘I have read that she and this person had a makeshift wedding.  'I’m not going to say they were married.  ‘The people Jamey was meeting were not true Muslims.  'They were not people of God. They were people that had no right representing a peaceful culture.’ Ms Carney was left an estimated $1million inheritance after her father died about two years ago. Her body was found by her 13-year-old daughter Michaela on July 7, in the home they shared in Killarney. It is believed she was killed after an argument with her 28-year-old Jordanian-born boyfriend Ahmad Al-Saqar either the night before or during the early hours of the following day. Mr Al-Saqar was a failed asylum seeker.  He moved to Ireland in 2024 after first travelling from his native Jordan to the UK.  On arrival there, he crossed over the border from the North into the Republic, where he then applied for asylum. His application was denied and he was appealing this decision when his girlfriend was found dead at her home. Before becoming romantically involved with Ms Carney, Mr Al-Saqar had been living at an IPAS centre in Killarney.  And in recent weeks, he had told pals there he and Ms Carney had married in a traditional Muslim wedding ceremony. Gardaí believe the Jordanian national was in Ms Carney’s home when she was killed.  And it has also been established that he booked a flight to Jordan while travelling on a bus from Killarney to Dublin. This bus left the Co. Kerry town at 4.30am on the morning of July 7 and, after being dropped off at Bachelor’s Walk in Dublin’s north inner city, Mr Al-Saqar took a taxi to Dublin Airport. He then boarded a Turkish Airlines flight to Istanbul and from there he travelled on to his native Jordan. Meanwhile, Ms Carney’s body was discovered hours later by Michaela when the schoolgirl returned home from a sleepover at a friend’s house. Relatives are shocked, hurt and angry, that a failed asylum seeker was able to leave the country with such ease. Mr Fox said: ‘He never should have been able to leave.  'I don’t understand how that can happen.  'I don’t understand it, especially the fact that her daughter had to find her.  'She knew something wasn’t right and that’s when she called one of the friends.  'And this girl is 13 years old.  'She saw her mum; there had been 12 hours since it happened.’ Ireland does not have any extradition arrangements with Jordan but gardaí have gone to the Middle Eastern country to speak with authorities there.  During their recent visit they were not allowed to interview the chief suspect in Ms Carney’s murder. Ms Carney’s mother and sister have returned to the US after coming to Ireland for her funeral. Mr Fox said her daughter will remain in this country, adding: ‘Jamey wanted to raise Michaela in Ireland...
