By WAYNE FLOWER, SENIOR NEWS REPORTER, AUSTRALIA Published: 16:16, 8 July 2026 | Updated: 16:16, 8 July 2026 The whistleblower doctor who helped put away mushroom chef killer Erin Patterson is a broken man and penniless after he spoke out about her last year. Dr Chris Webster made headlines during and after Patterson's epic trial with his straight-talking account of what took place when the killer walked into his hospital. Patterson, 51, was found guilty of the murders of Don and Gail Patterson, and Gail's sister, Heather Wilkinson.  An appeal over her conviction and sentence is scheduled for next month.  On Wednesday, Dr Webster told Daily Mail he was broke, with literally just a dollar to his name in each of his four bank accounts - and an $18.93 debt in the fifth.  'Erin Patterson murdered three human beings and destroyed a country practice,' he said.  The doctor said he was targeted by rivals last year after he revealed what happened the day after Patterson had poisoned her guests.  After the verdict, Dr Webster told Melbourne newspaper the Herald Sun he thought Patterson was a 'crazy b***h'. Dr Chris Webster after giving evidence against Erin Patterson last year  'If she said she picked them (the death caps), it would have been a very different mindset for me because there would have been an instant assumption it was all a tragic accident,' he told the newspaper. 'But once she said (that she bought the mushrooms from Woolworths), my thoughts were, "Holy f***ing shit, you f***ing did it, you crazy b***h, you poisoned them all." 'The turning point for me was that moment.' Dr Webster also described Patterson as a 'disturbed sociopathic nutbag'. In September, the Medical Board of Australia ordered Dr Webster complete one-on-one education with an approved educator for a minimum of eight hours. In February, additional strict conditions imposed by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency effectively now stop him practising altogether. He is restricted to working at specific locations, but there are no permitted locations. The reasons behind that decision remain secret 'due to privacy considerations'.  Dr Webster told Daily Mail he was unable to say much due to an existing personal safety intervention order in place to protect an undisclosed person.  Erin Patterson, 51, was found guilty of the murders of Don and Gail Patterson, and Gail's sister, Heather Wilkinson Documents seen by Daily Mail show Dr Webster's current four bank accounts contain just $1 each, with a fifth $18.93 in arrears.  National Australia Bank is also chasing him for unpaid loan repayments that now run to 'tens of thousands of dollars', he said.  'Do you think AHPRA contacted NAB before stripping away my livelihood?' he added.  Dr Webster has now unloaded his frustrations in an intense post to social media platform TikTok. 'If you think I deserve to lose my livelihood, have my company bankrupted, have my reputation s***canned in the media - all for the heinous crime of calling a mass murderer a sociopath - then you are wrong,' he said on a video.  'If you continue to watch this channel, in time you will come to realise that I am right.' The video has been liked almost 1000 times, with many expressing their support for the embattled doctor.  'I support you. It's such a rare, unexpected, unhinged and evil situation you found yourself in. Be proud you recognised it and didn't drop the ball. You did great,' one follower posted.  Dr Webster took to social media to explain his plight  'So honesty is now a problem. You’re a hero in this story,' another posted.  Dr Webster's supporters have told the Daily Mail he had been targeted by critics of his now-defunct practice for failing to hand over medical records to former patients.  One media report ran a story headlined: 'Lifesaving medication held hostage in records standoff'. That report quoted Federal Monash MP Mary Aldred, who told parliament in April that patients were still waiting for records 75 days after the closure. She said she had written to the federal Minister for Health and Ageing for a second time to demand urgent intervention.  'They've accused the doctor of withholding patient records with no explanation as to why they’re being held, making him look like some vindictive a***hole,' one supporter told Daily Mail.  'In reality he’s losing his entire livelihood ... businessmen and politicians are getting a free ride. This bloke is a f***ing hero.' Dr Webster's supporters are hoping to set up a GoFundMe fundraiser for the doctor to help get him back on his feet.  Dr Webster had been treating Patterson's victims Don and Gail (pictured) when she arrived at the hospital  'The bloke would make a million dollars in a day,' another supporter said.  The country doctor was a key medical witness in the ten-week trial, and told the jury he first encountered Patterson at Leongatha Hospital about 8am on Sunday, July 31, 2023, two days after her deadly lunch. At that time, Don, Gail, Heather and her husband, Ian Wilkinson were fighting for life in various hospitals. Dr Webster was already aware that her four guests may have been poisoned with death cap mushrooms when he first saw Patterson at the hospital. The experienced doctor told the jury he apologised to Patterson before he recognised her as the lunch cook. Dr Webster had accepted the initial AHPRA ruling, telling reporters at the time he felt a burden released from his shoulders. He had vowed to clear his name following the verdict comments after he was accused of being a 'misogynist'. 'I'm not that at all, that's not me,' Dr Webster told Daily Mail at the time. 'I stand by what I've done, this is very important. Pastor Ian Wilkinson was the only guest to survive Patterson's rotten lunch  'I'm happy to do all the media but it's become all too much now and I have engaged a lawyer and am now gagged from any future media [in the short term]. 'It's one thing copping these accusations on social media and Instagram but now it's formal complaints. 'I need to get home and back to work and sort this out, and once things are sorted I will speak again.' Dr Webster said the complaints had left him and his family exhausted. 'One of the complaints accused me of talking about a "patient of mine", they referred to Patterson as a "patient of mine", not as a convicted killer,' he said. During the trial, Dr Webster told the court that Patterson had discharged herself against medical advice. 'I was surprised, well, I had just informed (her) she had just been exposed to a deadly death cap mushroom and I thought hospital would be a better place to be,' Dr Webster told the court. 'I rang Erin's mobile three times and left three voicemails. I was apologetic, and I informed the voicemail that I would have to inform police for her health and safety to bring her back to hospital.' Patterson's legal team Sophie Stafford (left), Ophelia Holloway (centre) and Colin Mandy SC outside court last year  Patterson was brought to justice by Detective Leading Senior Constable Stephen Eppingstall Dr Webster rang triple-0 and a recording of that call was played to the jury during the trial. The operator informed Dr Webster that police would drive to Patterson's home in Leongatha to perform a welfare check. Dr Webster said he encountered Patterson again just before 10am that same day after she returned to the hospital. At 10.04am, police called the hospital and said they had arrived at Patterson's house. 'I told them she was here [at hospital] but I asked them to grab some of the leftover Wellington,' Dr Webster said. 'I had no idea, but figured there was a chance, strike while the iron is hot.' Dr Webster said he became concerned about Patterson after warning her that her children could be in dire trouble. 'I stressed the importance of getting them to hospital,' he said. 'Erin was reluctant to inform the children and I said it was important, she was concerned they were going to be frightened. 'I said, "They can be scared and alive, or dead."'
