Rudman United States Courthouse.Boston Globe via Getty ImagesKey FactsThe $53 million will be split across two class action settlement funds and is expected to take several months to distribute, according to the Harvard Crimson.Cedric Lodge, who managed the morgue for Harvard Medical School's Anatomical Gift Program, stole organs, brains, faces and other body parts from donated cadavers between 2018 and August 2022, then sold them to buyers across multiple states, the Justice Department said.Families began suing Harvard over the thefts in 2023, arguing the school had failed to adequately protect remains entrusted to it, and the lawsuits were initially dismissed before the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ultimately sided with families and forced the suits to the settlement table. An initial class action lawsuit estimated that between 350 and 400 donated cadavers may have been affected, and accused Harvard of negligence, breach of fiduciary duty and infliction of emotional distress.As part of the settlement, Harvard Medical School will address donor families directly via a live webinar to acknowledge that Lodge's conduct was "morally reprehensible” and establish an annual financial aid scholarship for medical students starting in the 2027–2028 academic year, the Harvard Crims...
