Garcia, yolcuların tahliyesinin gerçekleştiği gemide sadece 32 kişilik mürettebatın kaldığını bildirdi. Basına açıklama yapan Garcia, gün boyunca yakıt ikmali yapan MV Hondius'un kalan mürettebat ile akşam saatlerinde Tenerife'den ayrılacağını kaydetti. Bakan Garcia ayrıca, "Gemi yola çıktıktan ve uçak kalktıktan sonra, protokol gereği limanın dezenfeksiyonuna başlayacağız. Bu işlem alanında uzmanlar tarafından gerçekleştirilecek." ifadesini kullandı. Gemiden son olarak karaya çıkarılan 22 yolcunun da Hollanda'dan giden uçakla bu ülkeye gönderileceği bilgisi paylaşıldı. Hollanda bandralı lüks yolcu gemisi MV Hondius, 1 Nisan'da Arjantin'in Ushuaia Limanı'ndan hareket etmişti. Gemide, 11 Nisan'da 70 yaşındaki bir Hollandalı hayatını kaybetmiş, 13-16 Nisan tarihlerinde Afrika'nın batısındaki Tristan da Cunha, Erişilmez Ada ve Bülbül Adası ziyaretlerinde 6 yolcunun daha gemiye binmesiyle bu tarihlerdeki kayıtlara göre toplamda 180 yolcu ve mürettebat olduğu belirtilmişti. Santa Elena'ya geldiğinde gemiden 30 kadar yolcunun yanı sıra hayatını kaybeden yolcunun cesedi ile semptom bulunan Hollandalı eşi de ayrılmıştı. Johannesburg'a giden Hollandalı kadın 26 Nisan'da hayatını kaybetmişti. İngiliz vatandaşı olan ve semptom gösteren bir erkek yolcu da yanındaki ABD'li arkadaşı ile 27 Nisan'da gemiden indirilmişti. Dünya Sağlık Örgütü (DSÖ) 2 Mayıs'ta MV Hondius, Cabo Verde'de (Yeşil Burun Adaları) olduğu sırada hantavirüs vakalarının gemide görüldüğünü açıklamış ve 3 Mayıs'ta bir Alman kadın yolcunun hayatını kaybetmesiyle bu gemide seyahat edip virüsten ölenlerin sayısı 3'e çıkmıştı. Capo Verde yetkililerinin geminin yanaşmasına ve herhangi bir kişinin inmesine izin vermemesi üzerine DSÖ ve İspanya arasında yapılan görüşmeler sonrasında 5 Mayıs'ta yolcuların indirilmesi için MV Hondius'un Tenerife'ye getirilmesine karar verilmişti. Tenerife'den tahliye edilen yolculardan 1 Fransız ve 1 ABD'li de ülkelerine gittiklerinde hantavirüs testleri pozitif çıkmıştı. Hantavirüs, çoğunlukla kemirgenlerden bulaşan hastalık olarak biliniyor. Kemirgenlerin kurumuş dışkı, idrar ve salyalarının karıştığı havanın solunması, bazen de kemirgen tarafından ısırılma ya da tırmalanmayla bulaşan virüs, ateş, yorgunluk ve kas ağrısı gibi semptomlar gösteriyor. Solunum yetmezliğine de sebep olabilen virüs, bazı durumlarda iç kanama ve böbrek yetmezliği şeklinde seyrediyor.
