The 61-year-old’s previous deal was set to expire in the summer of 2027, but he has now extended his stay in Spain by another year. Flick’s new contract comes after the head coach led Barcelona to their second consecutive La Liga title, which was confirmed after their 2-0 Clasico victory over Real Madrid on May 10. In March, Flick said that the Barcelona role will be his final job in management. In April, he confirmed his intention to renew his contract with the Spanish champions. “I’ve realised I’m in the right place,” Flick said in a press conference last Tuesday. “It’s a commitment on our part to reach the highest level and win new titles. “Everyone dreams of the Champions League. We’ve tried and we’ll keep trying. I’m grateful for the trust placed in me to continue.” Flick’s managerial career began in 1996 with German side FC Bammental. He has had spells at Hoffenheim and RB Salzburg, in addition to working for the Germany national team and Bayern Munich, both as assistant manager and head coach. He has also been the sporting director for Hoffenheim and Germany. Since replacing Xavi as Barcelona head coach in the summer of 2024, he has won five trophies with Barca. Flick previously described Barcelona as the “best” environment he has experienced in football, saying: “I had a great time with the national team and with Bayern, but here I feel that everything around me is the best. Looking at everything — my career and my family — I’m very happy.” Analysis from Spanish football writer Dermot Corrigan Confirmation that Flick’s contract was being renewed was no surprise, but it is richly deserved given the scale of the German’s achievements since arriving. Flick came into a really difficult situation — the team had not been performing under predecessor Xavi, amid continuing financial issues which restricted the club’s movements in the transfer market. Barca have nevertheless been almost completely dominant domestically over the last two seasons, winning two La Ligas, two Spanish Supercopas and one Copa del Rey (only losing narrowly in this season’s semi-finals to Atletico Madrid). Among the most impressive achievements has been how Flick has understood and encouraged a tremendous team spirit based around the local core of La Masia graduates such as Lamine Yamal, Pau Cubarsi, Eric Garcia and Fermin Lopez, and a style of play which suits their characteristics. Meanwhile, he has coaxed outstanding performances from other players such as Raphinha, Joan Garcia and (last season) Inigo Martinez. Potential problems, like delays over returning to their Camp Nou home and tensions with fitness and medical staff, have been handled with authority and common sense. The one shadow has been falling short in Europe — but that is understandable given the shortcomings in the current squad, which does not match for quality or depth the panels available to Pep Guardiola or Luis Enrique when they won Champions Leagues over a decade ago. Sporting director Deco is now working on upgrades for next season, with the UCL the next objective for Blaugrana fans and pundits. News that Flick is staying on will be welcomed with that in mind.
