The minor-league franchise, which will be relocating to Hamilton, Ont., starting with the 2026-27 season, filed trademarks for three potential team names: “Mustangs,” “Havoc” and “Hammers.” The move marks the end of a 25-year run for the organization in Bridgeport, Conn. From 2001 to 2021, before rebranding to the Bridgeport Islanders, the team was known as the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. In Hamilton, the team will play out of the 18,000-seat TD Coliseum, which recently underwent a $300 million renovation and reopened with a Paul McCartney concert in November. The building was previously home to the AHL’s Hamilton Bulldogs from 1996 to 2015. In January, TD Coliseum also hosted a game between the PWHL’s Toronto Sceptres and Seattle Torrent as part of the league’s Takeover Tour. “We are excited to make Hamilton our primary affiliate in the American Hockey League,” said Islanders GM Mathieu Darche in a news release. “The support the city has shown our organization throughout this transition has been incredible. We look forward to having our top young talent play in front of such a strong fanbase inside the newly renovated, world-class TD Coliseum and we are committed to establishing ourselves in the community to engage a new generation of hockey fans.” Although the American Hockey League’s board of governors unanimously approved the Bridgeport Islanders’ relocation to the city, the team’s rebrand is still in progress. The NHL’s Utah Mammoth, then known as the Utah Hockey Club, faced obstacles when choosing the team’s permanent name, ultimately deciding based on a fan vote among three finalists. It’s unknown whether the Islanders will follow a similar process with the Mustangs, Havoc and Hammers. If the name “Hamilton Mustangs” sounds familiar, it was a fictional Ontario Hockey League team in the 1986 movie “Youngblood,” starring Rob Lowe, Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze. “The Hammer,” a nickname for Hamilton, stems from the city’s rich industrial and steelmaking history.
