Green Party councillor in Birmingham is charged with assaulting five people - including three police officers

West Midlands Police were called to reports of disorder in Edgbaston, near the junction of Monument Road and Hagley Road at around 5pm on August 6. The force said Siobhan Harper-Nunes, 66, was initially arrested on suspicion of assault.  On Friday, she was charged with assaulting a member of the public, three police officers and a member of police staff. Harper-Nunes was elected as a Green Party councillor for Birmingham City Council representing the Ladywood ward. She also stood as the Green Party's candidate for the West Midlands mayoral election in 2024. The party said it has now suspended her as a councillor with immediate effect pending an investigation. In a statement on Friday, West Midlands Police said: 'We were called to disorder near the junction of Monument Road and Hagley Road at around 5pm yesterday (August 6). 'A woman was arrested on suspicion of assault. Siobhan Harper-Nunes, 66, has been charged with assaulting a member of the public, three police officers and a member of police staff 'This afternoon, Siobhan Harper-Nunes, aged 66, of Monument Road, was charged with assaulting a member of the public, three police officers and a member of police staff.' She has been bailed to appear before Birmingham Magistrates' Court on September 10. Harper-Nunes also previously stood in the Gravelly Hill ward during the May 2022 Birmingham City Council elections. She was also the Green Party candidate in the 2022 parliamentary by-election for the Erdington constituency. She said she does not describe herself as a career politician, instead saying she is an experienced political campaigner. In 2006, she founded Shakti Women to help women who struggle with balancing their families, careers and lives. The group brings its members together with walks, coffee mornings, workshops, therapy and other activities. Harper-Nunes was vice-chair of Birmingham Race Impact Group and vowed to use her position to educate and change attitudes.  She told the BBC in 2024 that politicians should lead by example instead of fuelling hatred, adding that there should be 'no room in politics for the ugly Islamophobia and antisemitism that we have seen recently'.
