new Australia national record for 200m with a 19.67 run at Sunday’s national championships — eclipsing Usain Bolt’s time at the same age. The 18-year-old’s time is the fastest in the world so far this year and marks the first time he ran under the 20-second mark legally, after his wind-assisted 19.84 at the same event in 2025. His time would have ranked third in the Paris Olympics in 2024 — Noah Lyles won bronze with 19.70 — and was faster than sprinting great Bolt’s best time of 19.93 as a junior athlete, set in 2004. Sunday’s race was the first time an Australian had run under the under-20 second mark but incredibly, the 22-year-old Aidan Murphy, from South Australia, clocked 19.88. Seven of the eight participants in the final ran a personal best time. Australia’s long-running national 200m record of 20.06 was set by Peter Norman at the Mexico City Olympics in 1968, before Gout ran 20.04 and then 20.02 last year. Sunday’s event was notably missing Australia’s 100m champions Lachlan Kennedy, 22, who has beaten Gout twice over 200m but pulled out following successive 9.96 times in the 100m event. 18-year-old GOUT GOUT 🇦🇺 19.67s (1.7) over 200m at Australian Championships in Sydney!!🤯🤯 A new U20 World Record ☑️National Record ☑️ First Australian man under 20 seconds ☑️ A star is born!pic.twitter.com/1GTfFJ4gst — Track & Field Gazette (@TrackGazette) April 12, 2026 Gout, born in Queensland, Australia after his parents migrated from South Sudan, is the second fastest 200m sprinter under-20 in all conditions; only American Erriyon Knighton, then aged 18, has run faster when he clocked 19.49 at the LSU Invitational in 2022. “This is what I’ve been waiting for,” said Gout on Sunday. “We have such incredible athletes in Australia and me being able to race these athletes, we push each other to the limits. Two Australians sub-20. I mean, this is amazing. “There’s a big weight off my shoulders knowing I ran it legally, and I have the speed and my body to run times like that. So, it definitely feels great, and I’m ready for more.” Only 15 sprinters have ever run faster than Gout’s 19.67. Spot the pattern.
