"For me, becoming a vicar was for a long time the last thing I wanted to do, and I really mean that. That's because my dad had been a vicar, and as a child I had seen how hard that could sometimes be.
"I watched him being mistreated by people and as a young child, that leaves an impression on you. But something changed. When I went to uni, I was doing a politics degree and I was convinced, as I still am, that politics can be a great force for good, that it can be used to love and serve people.
"But while I was at uni, I kind of did my degree on the side, really, because the thing that most excited me was growing in my relationship with God, and my understanding of the message of Jesus Christ contained in the Bible, and then sharing that message with others, I became and remain convinced that the message of Jesus Christ is the best news in the world, that it's true, and that it couldn't be more relevant to every man and woman, boy and girl."
