"In Luke Chapter 14, Jesus says, when someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honour for a person more distinguished than you may have been invited.
"Humility is sometimes misunderstood. It's not thinking less of ourselves. It is thinking of ourselves rightly. It means recognising our strength, our weaknesses, our gifts, our limitations.
"A certain Teresa of Avila wisely observed, humility is walking in truth. The humble person does not claim what belongs to another, nor seek glory that has not been earned.
"The Christian tradition often describes pride as the root of many failings and fallings pride can lead us to a place of ourselves at the where we focus on ourselves at the centre of everything. Humility does the opposite.
"It is the antidote of pride. It's not weakness, but it allows us to appreciate others, to learn from them, to celebrate their success. It frees us from the exhausting task of constantly proving ourselves. Jesus concluded by saying, whoever exalts himself shall be amazed, and he that humbles himself will be exalted.
"We no longer need to compete for the sense of recognition or status. Instead, we can live with a gratitude and contentment and a grace that comes from God."
