By WILL HALLOWELL, NEWS REPORTER Published: 20:19, 29 June 2026 | Updated: 20:19, 29 June 2026 A French national has appeared in court after being charged with the murder and rape of his two-year-old daughter. Kevin Kerjean, 31, who was born in the Central African Republic, has been remanded in custody ahead of his next appearance at Guildford Crown Court on September 14. On Saturday, he was charged with murder, rape of a child under 13 and sexual assault of a child under 13. Surrey Police have now confirmed that the alleged victim was his daughter. Officers had been called to an address in Pyrcroft Road in Chertsey at around 5.40pm on Thursday after reports of a concern for safety. However when police arrived, they discovered the two-year-old was already dead. Detective Chief Superintendent Jon Groenen said: 'This is a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the child's mother and extended family, as well as all those who knew her. 'Our teams are working hard to build a picture of what happened, and a significant police presence will remain in Pyrcroft Road over the coming days. The child's body was discovered at a home on Pycroft Road in Chertsey after officers responded to a 'concern for safety' 'We appreciate that the incident itself, as well as the significant police presence, will be concerning for residents and we would like to thank them for their cooperation as we conduct our investigation.' Surrey Police is continuing to investigate the incident and has encouraged anyone with information including dashcam and CCTV around the time of the alleged murder to approach the force directly or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. In a previous update, police said the Home Office had confirmed that Kerjean entered the UK and applied for European Union Settled Status in December 2020. The suspect was granted leave to remain in the UK in March 2021 and received an extension which gave him permission to remain until March 2031. The force also said that despite online commentary about the case suggesting Kerjean was an asylum seeker living in a house of multiple occupation (HMO), 'this is incorrect'. Police had also previously said they believed the alleged rape and murder of the two-year-old girl occurred 'in a family setting'. On Friday, bouquets of flowers were left at the entrance to Syward Place, a flat complex on the corner of Pycroft Road and Bell Bridge Road. One Chertsey resident said: 'I'm surprised, that's very unusual for Chertsey'. While another said: 'It's tragic. Things like that don't happen around here.'
