A passenger on an American Airlines flight bit a fellow traveller and attempted to fight multiple others as chaos broke out on board.

Flight 3046 had been making its way to Philadelphia on Sunday morning when carnage broke out.

An audio recording captured its pilot informing air traffic control about the escalating situation.

"He just bit a passenger, and he's trying to fight everybody," the pilot said in the recording, which was posted on LiveATC.

Crew immediately requested that police and emergency medical personnel meet the aircraft as a precautionary measure when it landed.

The pilot told controllers he was uncertain what had triggered the passenger's behaviour.

He suggested the individual might have been experiencing some form of hallucination during the incident.

"I don't know... if he's hallucinating," the pilot said.

"Can you pass along, we need EMTs as well as law enforcement," he told air traffic control.

American Airlines told Fox News on Monday that the passenger had experienced a medical emergency during the flight.

A medical professional who happened to be on board also stepped in to help before the aircraft touched down.

"Medical personnel met flight 3046 at the gate for a customer experiencing a medical emergency," the airline said.

"We appreciate the actions of our team members and the medical professional on board who assisted the customer as the flight arrived safely at Philadelphia."

ATC staff eventually broke the tension - wishing the pilot a happy Father's Day.

"What a day, huh?" the pilot replied. "I'll be sure to tell my daughters about this one."

The turmoil erupted just weeks after the same carrier was struck by another in-flight incident.

In March, an American Airlines flight was forced to make an emergency landing after a passenger allegedly threatened to blow up the plane.

Jason Douglas Pazol is accused of causing a mid-air scare on a Chicago-bound flight - which had to be diverted miles off-course to Detroit.

Mr Pazol told passengers: "I swear to God, I am going to do something terrible."

According to a federal complaint, he claimed he was experiencing a breakdown linked to medication issues during the flight.

He later told authorities he made the outburst because he was "f****** sick".
