Fire rips through coach on UK motorway as eight people rushed to hospital

A fire has ripped through a coach on a UK motorway, with eight people rushed to a hospital.

On Friday afternoon, a coach parked on the M25 in Surrey was consumed by black some and flames.

The road was fully closed amid road safety concerns.

Up to 12 miles of congestions and delays of around 90 minutes were caused during peak rush hour.

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service said four fire engines and water carrier were sent to the scene.

The South East Coast Ambulance Service had confirmed multiple crews were sent to assess those involved in the incident.

Eight people were taken to hospital for further checks and treatment.

A fire service spokesman said everyone had been accounted for.

Becky Slack, who was on the motorway, told the BBC she saw large amounts of smoke.

"We realised there was a bus on fire, and another bus parked in front of it," she said.

She added there was a "train of people" being led away.

One lane was closed throughout the night.

All lanes were finally reopened just before 2am, with no delays or congestions reported.

Surrey Fire and Rescue said in its statement: "We are dealing with a coach fire on the M25, junction 9 to 8, Leatherhead.

"We currently have four fire engines and a water carrier at the scene, and there's lots of smoke in the area.

"Highways, police and ambulance services are also in attendance.

"Everyone is accounted for.

"The stretch of road from junctions 9 to 8, anticlockwise, is currently closed while we deal with the incident."

Parts of the M25 ring road was on Wednesday after two separate lorry fires caused major delays.

The lorry between junction 27 and 26 was described as "well alight" as emergency services arrived.
