Around 50 youths were seen weaving between traffic and cutting off motorists as they drove from Fawkner to Newport at 5.30pm on Sunday. A small SUV is understood to have collided with one of the bikes. Around 12 motorcyclists turned on the driver, with many getting off their bikes and some members believed to have been carrying machetes. Footage showed the youths, most of them dressed in black, surrounding the vehicle. The small SUV had lost its front bumper, its windscreen was smashed, and the front half was stuck on top of a motorcycle. One of the youths repeatedly raised his leg to try and kick in the driver's window. The terrified driver sat inside, attempting to accelerate as smoke rose from one of the tyres. The group then fled and a Good Samaritan attempted to help the driver. 'It's alright now brother, just calm it, calm it down … you're okay mate,' the man said. 'You're alright, they're all gone brother.' A Victoria Police spokesman said the motorcyclists were seen driving erratically before the attack unfolded. 'The group were seen driving at speed, weaving through traffic and cutting off motorists,' he said. 'Around 12 of the riders, some armed with weapons, damaged a car and assaulted the driver near Melbourne Road in Newport shortly after 5.30pm.'
