Fearless three-year-old defies mom to take solo trek to grandma's house more than half a mile away

Published: 05:11, 30 July 2026 | Updated: 05:13, 30 July 2026 A fearless barefoot toddler embarked on a half-mile solo trek to his grandmother's house - without his mother knowing.  The adventure started early Sunday after little 3-year-old Declan told his mom he wanted to visit his grandmother down the road in their Idaho neighborhood. 'I told him no because it was early, and I believed he had accepted that answer,' Declan's mom, Hannah Driscoll, told Storyful. But the headstrong three-year-old had other plans. Security cameras caught him sneaking out the back door and dashing down the street. 'I called him upstairs for breakfast, assuming he was downstairs playing with siblings while I finished getting ready. Instead, he quietly let himself out of the house to walk [the] half mile,' Driscoll said.   'By the time I realized what had happened, I already knew my son was safe because my mom had called me,' she added. Doorbell camera footage captured the end of Declan's adventure, showing his grandmother opening the door in surprise as the cheeky boy ran inside. I laughed and said, "Why? Is Declan there?" She said, "...Yes,"' she wrote in her caption. Driscoll said she was flooded with emotions, shocked that Declan had made the trek on his own and overwhelmingly relieved that he was safe. She also admitted she felt like 'the worst mom ever,' but said all that mattered was that he was unharmed.  'My first emotions were disbelief and overwhelming relief, followed by a lot of guilt as I processed how quickly it had happened,' Driscoll said. The mom's friends quickly comforted her, reminding her how unbelievably fast toddlers can wander off.  'They also reminded me that this little guy only knew exactly where Grandma lived and how to get there safely, because we'd taught him,' she wrote in the caption. 'So if you're carrying around mom guilt today, this is your reminder that we all have moments that shake us. Give yourself some grace. 'And maybe... just maybe... make sure your toddler is actually downstairs before you finish getting ready,' she added.
